In continuation of my last weekend blog, which covered Bollywood actors who won best actor award in National film award over the years. In today’s blog I am writing about which are the Bollywood actresses who have won the best actress award in National Film awards.
Like best actor award, this was also started for the films released/passed by censors in 1967.
1 1967 Nargis Dutt- for film Raat Aur Din. This film which was started much earlier because Nargis got married, and hence could not complete the film because of birth of her children. She acted wonderfully, and portrayed the character of women with suffering from schizophrenia.
2 1970 Rehana Sultana for Dastak. I had described about this film in last weekend blog. She along with Sanjeev Kumar both won the National award for this film.
3 1971 Waheeda Rehman for Reshma and Shera. She played the role of Reshma in a story of two feuding families in the deserts of Rajasthan.
4 1974 Shabana Azmi for Ankur. This film was also described last week, as both Shabana and Sadhu Meher won the award for this film.
5 1975 Sharmila Tagore for Mausam. She played double role of Mother and daughter. In the first role she role she is in love with Sanjeev Kumar, who for some reason could not marry her, and she loses mental balance after she is married off to someone else. Years later Sanjeev Kumar finds her daughter, who has become prositute.
6 1977 Smita Patil for Bhumika. A Biopic made on the 50s actress Hansa Wadkar. Smita Patil really lived the role and deserved this award.
7 1980 Smita Patil for Chakra. Here she played the role of a poor woman living in Dharavi (Mumbai’s biggest slum), she s having teen age son. Her husband’s whereabouts are unknown and she is in illicit relationship with Naseeruddin Shah, lead actor of the film.
8 1981 Rekha for Umrao Jaan. A biopic on life and times of Umrao Jaan, who was very famous courtsean/mujrawali in late 19th century in Lucknow.
9 1982 Shabana Azmi for Arth.She played the role of a woman, whose film director husband ditches her for a film actress. How she copes up in life afterwards, and finds a meaning for her existence. When in the end he husband wants to come back to her, she plainly says no.
10 1983 Shabana Azmi for Khandhar and
11 1984 Shabana Azmi for Paar. Both these films were low budget art films. I do not know much about these films.
12 1993 Dimple Kapadia for Rudali. She played the role of professional mourner, who goes to someone’s death for crying/wailing for earning money.
13 1995 Seema Biswas for Bandit Queen. A biopic film made by Shekhar Kappoor on the life and times of famous dacoit Phoolan Devi.
14 1996 Tabu for Maachis. The film is based during the times of militancy in Punjab.
15 1998 Shabana Azmi for Godmother. This is also a kind of biopic film, which is about a story of a woman whose gangster husband’s death forces her to take charge of his business and how she excel in that.
16 2000 Raveena Tandon for Daman. She played the role of a married woman who is subjected for marital violence and how she comes out of it, and inspires other women suffering the same violence.
17 2001 Tabu for Chandni Bar. She plays the role of simple young woman who is deserted by her husband, and just to survive because she has two children, she became Bar dancer.
18 2008 Priyanka Chopra for Fashion. She plays the role of young girl who from struggling model became the top model and then due to personal life there is fall in her career, and how she overcomes and again reaches at top.
19 2011 Vidya Balan for The Dirty Picture. A biopic on the life and times of south Indian seductress actress Silk Smitha. Vidya really excelled in this role, although this was the first time she played such a role where she had to wear revealing dresses.
20 2013 Geetanjali Thapa for Liar’s Dice. Although this was a Hindi film, I do not have any information on this film.
21 2014 Kangana Ranaut for Queen. This is a story of simple and docile girl whose fiancé refuses to marry her just one day before the wedding date. As the honeymoon tickets were booked by her father, she goes abroad on same ticket. The story is about her liberation during her travel in Europe.
22 2015 Kangana Ranaut for Tanu Weds Manu Returns. This is a sequel of earlier film Tanu weds Manu. Kangana who play the role of Tanu gets married to Manu with great hurdles. In this sequel Tanu is bored with her husband Manu and leaves him in London and comes back to India. Manu also comes back and now in Delhi he meets a Haryanvi girl who resembles Tanu and falls for her. Kangana played the role of Haryanvi girl also and excelled in both the roles.
23 2017 Sridevi for Mom. She played the role of a mother whose college going daughter is raped by four friends after the Valentine day party and brutally injuring her, and left in a gutter presuming she has died, but she is not dead. How her mother takes the revenge, after the culprits are freed by the court, is balance of the film.
