Weekend

In continuation of last weekend blog, which was on some controversies  and  unusual incidents about the Filmare awards.

  1. For the awards of 1973 films, there were 3 star couples who got married in 1973 were awarded the Filmfare awards in different category. Jaya Bhaduri (co winner for the Actress in Abhimaan) & Amitabh Bachchan ( Supporting Actor in Namak Haram), Raakhi (supporting Actress in Daag) and Gulzar (Technical award for Dialogues-Namak Haram) and lastly Dimple Kapadia (co winner for the Actress in Bobby) & Rajesh Khanna (Special Award for his cameo role in Anuraag)
  2. For the awards of 1975 film, you will be surprised to know that the all time super hit film Sholay did not receive any popular award in Picture/director/acting/music categories. It got only award in technical category. But 25 years later, at the turn of new millennium in 2001 Fimlfare awarded as the best ever film of  20th century. Other controversy in 1975- most of the cine goers were expecting best acting awards for Amitabh Bachchan (Deewar) and Suchitra Sen (Aaandhi) but when the awards were announced every one was taken by surprise when they went to Sanjeev Kumar (Aandhi) and Laxmi (Julie).
  3. In 1976, the awards for the Best actress was given to Raakhi in Tapasya when everyone expected that it should go to Sharmila Tagore (Mausam). The reason given by Filmfare Editor was that as Sharmila had already won the National award for Mausam we did not consider her for this award.
  4. In 1978, Reena Roy was awarded the Best Supporting Actress Award for the film Apnapan. She refused the award saying that her role in the film was leading actress role, with negative This year Satyajit Ray got his  Filmfare award for  Best Director for his only Hindi Film Shatranj Ke Khiladi.
  5. In 1979 Gulzaar got his first Filmfare award as Best Lyricist for the Song Aanewala Pa, Jaanewala Hai (Golmaal). Till date he was won 10 awards as best Lyricist, a record.
  6. 1n 1980, Laxmikant Pyarelal became the first music composer who got award for Best Music Director for 4 year in succession, Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Satyam Shivam Sundram (1978), Sargam (1979) and Karz (1980).
  7. In 1982, after being nominated and neglected for last so many years, it was at last the Best Music Director Award went to RD Burman for the film Sanam Teri Kasam, which is not considered among his top class work.
  8. In 1983, everyone was expecting that the Best Actor award should go to Om Puri (Ardh Satya) but the award went to Naseeruddin Shah for Masoom, later Om Puri won the national award for Ardh Satya.
  9. For the films released in 1986 and 1987, No awards were announced, and Filmfare never released the statement why they have suspended the awards.
  10. When the awards were restarted in 1988, Filmfare changed the announcement system for the awards. Earlier awards were announced first and then on the later date they were presented to the winners. From 1988, the awards were announced and presented in a function, here Filmfare copied the format popularised by Oscar awards.
  11. One big controversy happened when awards for 1992 were being presented. When there was time for announcing the award for the Best actor award, everyone in the audience was rooting for Aamir Khan for his performance in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. But what happened next was something unusual- Dimple Kapadia was called on to the stage for announcing the Best actor award and she just saw the envelope, in which winner’s name was there, and without opening the envelope she announced the name of Anil Kapoor for Beta. There was big commotion ever where, friend I was also present in this function and had witnessed this how it happened.
  12. In 1995, also it become evident that Filmfare awards are being compromised by some known industry groups. As during this year most of the awards were captured by Yash Chopra produced film ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, as this won 8 popular awards out of 12, the 4 awards which this film did not win were Supporting actor, Villain, Music and Female playback singer. Although in best actor category again people were rooting for Aamir Khan for playing offbeat character of Tapori in Rangeela, but this award went to Shah Rukh Khan for DDLJ. From that day Aamir Khan decided not to attend Filmfare or any other awards function (except National awards) saying that they are not genuine awards. Although Filmfare afterwards has awarded Aamir Khan in various categories like actor, producer and director, he has not collected any  award trophies and film fraternity knows about this and no one from the fraternity collects any award on his behalf.
