VEHICLE NUMBER PLATES
In our country India, if you want to drive any type of motorized vehicle on the road, then after the purchase of a vehicle you have to get the vehicle registered with the Road Transport Authority of your town/city. The transport authority then issues you a registration number which has to be displayed on the front and back side of your vehicle in the prescribed manner. This is known as the number plate of that vehicle. In our country when you are on the road and if you observe you will see many types of number plates fixed on vehicles, and the main difference among them is the background colour of the plate where the vehicle number is displayed.
Here are the details of the different colour number plates used in our country:
1 White Coloured Number Plate
On this type of number plate, you will observe that on a white background, the registration number of the vehicle is displayed in black. This type of number plate is used for vehicles that are privately owned by individuals or companies, and driven for personal use. The vehicle can be a four-wheeler or two-wheeler.
2 Yellow Colour Number Plate
On this type of number plate, you will observe that on the yellow background, the registration number of the vehicle is displayed in black. This type of number plate is used for all commercial vehicles whether three-wheelers or four-wheelers like auto rickshaws, public and private taxis, public and private buses, trucks, tempos, etc. The person who is driving this vehicle should have a commercial driving license for light or heavy vehicles.
3 Red Colour Number Plate
This type of number plate is used for the cars used by the President of the country, and the Governors of the States. These vehicles do not have any numbers, and only the Ashoka emblem is displayed.
Other than this, the red colour number plates are used on those vehicles which are brought on the road by vehicle manufacturing companies for testing and promotion/publicity purposes. The vehicles are then assigned a temporary registration number.
4 Blue Colour Number Plate
This type of number plate with a blue background and registration number in white is used for the vehicles used by Foreign Embassies, Consulates, and Envoys. It is also used for vehicles used by the people working for the United Nations.
5 Black Colour Number Plate
This type of number plate with a black background and registration in white/golden colour is meant for vehicles that are owned by persons/companies and then given on rent/lease to corporate/hotels etc. For driving these vehicles no commercial driving license is required, any person with a driving license can drive these vehicles.
6 Green Colour Number Plate
This type of number plate has been introduced recently. Here on the green colour background, the registration number is in white. This number plate is allotted to Electric Vehicles. The Electric vehicle can be a two-wheeler, three-wheeler, or four-wheeler., and it is used for both private and commercial vehicles.
7 Number Plate with Sign of Arrow
If you see any vehicle in the country with a broad arrow, which can be either in the beginning or in the middle portion of the number plate, please note that the vehicle belongs to the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Airforce, and Navy). These vehicle registration numbers are also issued by respective armed forces.
