Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, who is widely regarded as the architect of modern India, also made many blunders in deciding central government policies and decisions. Some of his actions/ideas have been seen as creating long-term problems and challenges for India. After last month’s assembly elections in five states, there have been many changes in the political scenario especially concerning the INDI alliance. In today’s blog, I am writing about some of my stray thoughts on the current  INDIAN POLITICAL SCENE. 1 After losing the three Hindi Heartland states Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhatisgarh, the Indian National Congress (INC) party has lost its foothold in Northern Hindi-speaking areas . Now INC is ruling only in Himachal Pradesh in the north, whereas its presence in other northern state like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar & Jharkhand is not very encouraging. Yesterday Lok  Sabha passed three Criminal Law Bills. The Bhartiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita 2023 (BNS) which replaces the Indian Penal Code 1860; The  Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita 2023 (BNSS) which replaces the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973; and The Bhartiya Sakshhya (Second) Bill 2023 (BSB) which replaces Indian Evidence Act 1872. The Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the Bill which was later passed by voice vote. Here are certain Highlights of these Bills: ‘Terrorist Act’ is defined as a separate offence under the BNS which includes acts which attack India’s unity, integrity, sovereignty, security, economic security, or spread terror among any group. The offence of ‘Sedition’ was omitted. The BNS penalizes acts endangering the unity and integrity of India. While sedition criminalized acts against the government, the BNS replaced the government with the country. ‘Rajdroh’ has been changed as ‘Deshdroh’. Friends, in the last few days various media have been writing/talking about GYANVAPI case. The case is about Gyanvapi mosque located in Varanasi near Kashi Vishwanath temple. The first surprise to me was how can a mosque be named Gyanvapi, which is a pure Hindi word. According to available historical records, it was built on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb after destroying the original Kashi Vishwanath temple situated there. Yesterday, The Allahabad High Court (HC) ruled that civil suits filed by Hindu worshippers and deities inter alia seeking restoration of the temple on mosque premises are not barred by the Places of Worship Act. Notably, the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act 1991 prohibits the conversion of a religious structure from its nature as it stood on 15th August 1947, the date of independence.
