e-Learning and Seniors

When Covid 19 struck, the whole world withdrew into the confines of four walls. But education moved beyond those confines like never before. It wasn’t that we did not have online and e-Learning avenues earlier. However, with the traditional educators and school children quickly adapting to this mode, perspectives changed forever. It opened unlimited opportunities for all those who wanted to learn. Even elder people are also turning to e-learning. To explore the realms of adult learning, we must delve a bit into teaching methods of adult learning, which is what Andragogy ( the teaching and learning methods for adults) is. Our schooling has conditioned us to be dependent and guided learners. Even though adults are self-directed learners, it may take time for them to understand this and apply their facilities to make it work. All seniors need is a zeal to learn and a child-like curiosity to obtain knowledge….

ONOP

Friends,  in the media there is one news which is being widely circulated and that is of ONE NATION ONE POLL (ONOP). What is it actually? Actually, it means when the country goes for the general elections (for the Lok Sabha),  simultaneously the elections for State Assemblies should also be held. The first General Elections were held in 1951/52 and at that time the elections for all the existing States Assemblies were also held together with the general elections. This happened again at the times of general elections in 1957 and 1962. However, the premature dissolution of certain State Assemblies in 1968 and 1969 broke the chain. In 1970, the 4th Lok Sabha was itself dissolved pre-maturely, and fresh General elections were held. Then the term of the 5th Lok Sabha was extended during emergency till 1977 under Article 352 (Emergency). Subsequent instances of dissolution of Lok Sabha and State…

Most Corrupt Countries

In the early 2000s, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan had said in a foreword to Organisation’s  ‘Convention Against Corruption’ that  “ Corruption has a wide range of corrosive effects on the societies”. Even after two decades corruption still remains a problem, with the most recent Corruption Perception Index from Transparency International indicating ‘most countries’ have failed to stop it. The group defines corruption as ‘the abuse of entrusted power for private gain’. The overall Best Countries analysis is based on a recent survey across the globe and assessed 87 countries using 73 different attributes. In the survey respondents answered whether they associated various countries with the word “corrupt”, per their own understanding of the term, and those perceptions were used to develop the ‘open for business’ sub ranking for the Best Countries rankings. How a corrupt country was perceived to be also factored into lists of ‘best countries to invest…

Technology, Money-Seniors

There is a general misconception that seniors have lots of cash and cannot handle technology to keep it safe. They are therefore seen as prey by the scamsters/cheats/fraudsters. The worst part is most of the seniors themselves hold a similar opinion on this subject. This gives rise to anxiety and fear in them when they have to handle money for daily usage through common processes provided by technology. This feat then keeps them away. The ease and convenience that these processes provide are worth the effort of understanding the issue. The common method of handling money without cash is through credit and debit cards. UPI payments are also now used by almost everyone. The risks involved and the simple precautions to be taken while using these methods are listed below. Please follow the steps suggested, they are easy and enumerated here to ensure that one is aware of the risks…

Bhagvad Gita-Teachings

Bhagavad Gita occupies a prominent place among the Hindu religious books revered by Hindus. The book contains quotes that throw light on the lost path for the confused mind. In Mahabharata, a confused Arjun turns to Lord Krishna for advice on the battlefield. Lord Krishna clarified Arjun’s doubts by stating the principles of the world. The same principles can solve many of our life problems even in the present day. Here are some important teachings of Bhagavad Gita: 1 Concentrate On Your Goal, Do Your Work, and Focus Not on the Result Suppose, you have a certain goal in mind, your dream is to achieve a certain position in the organization where you are working, in the next five years. So will have to work hard to get there. But if you start dreaming about the perks and other rewards of that position, but in case if you fail to…

Sanatan Dharm

In today’s newspaper, one news item that caught my eye is a statement made by Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is the Sports and Youth affairs minister in the Tamil Nadu Government and also happens to be the son of Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin. In his speech, he has mentioned about eradicating Sanatan Dharm. He said “ Sanatan Dharma is a principle that divides people in the name of caste and religion. Certain things like dengue, malaria, and corona need to be eradicated, not merely opposed. Likewise, Sanatan should be also eradicated”. This statement has triggered a strong reaction from the followers of Hinduism and Sanatan Dharm. The BJP has criticized the I N D I A alliance and its member parties, saying that this is not the first time parties like Congress and DMK have insulted the nation’s culture and Sanatan Dharm. In our country, there are many politicians and…
