India does not recognize SAME-SEX MARRIAGE or civil unions, though same-sex couples can attain the rights and benefits as a live-in couple, as per the Supreme Court of India (SC) landmark decision in August 2022. Presently, SC is hearing petitions filed by various people, including those belonging to LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans sexual, and Queer)  community and gay couples for allowing same-sex marriages. SC had asked the government’s opinion on this matter. The Central government’s affidavit filed in the SC, states that “ the SC’s 2018 verdict to de-criminalise homosexuality does not confer any right to the LGBTQ community to claim legal recognition for same-sex marriages”. Recently I came across a few news items, which caught my attention, and would like to share the same with you. 1 This news item is about what happened in Nashik’s session court yesterday. The court convicted and sentenced an MLA from Achalpur  Omprakash alias Baburao Kadu to one-year imprisonment each on two charges of assault on a public servant and intentional insult in July 2017. The sentences are to run concurrently. He was charged under section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servants from discharge of duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The said incident happened, when Kadu was at the Nashilk Municipal Corporation (NMC), making representation on behalf of his organization, which works for the disabled. Last week, I wrote a blog on Indian Polity where I mentioned national and state-level political parties, and what are the criteria for getting recognition as a political party from the Election Commission of India. We have 9 national-level and 55 state-level parties. Now, why have so many political parties mushroomed in the country? Indian politics has a multi-party system. The Election Commission of India (ECI) accords recognition to the national level and state-level political parties. A party is recognized as a national party only if it fulfils any one of the three conditions listed below: The party win 2% of seats in the Lok Sabha from at least three states. The Indian political scene is getting hotter as the next general election is only one year away, and all the opposition parties are searching for some formula so that Modi’s government at the Centre can be dislodged.
