Origin of Phrases
There is nothing like a good saying or phrase, to sum up how you feel. Something really interesting about old phrases is that a lot of them have been in use for centuries. This means a lot of sayings we use today might not be related to anything we would be able to recognize as meaning the same thing. Here are the interesting histories of some of our most commonly-used phrases. 1 “Get off your high horse” As per historians, this phrase dates back to the 1300s. It first appeared in John Wycliff’s book English Works, which describes war horses walking along with a procession. These horses are literally taller than other horses, and people began to use this saying as a way of describing someone who acts like they think they are better, or above others. 2 “Carbon copy” From the early 1870s, carbon paper was used to make…
Public Sector Banks
Public Sector Banks (PSB) are the entities that are owned by the govt. Till a few years back all these PSBs were in the red, which means they were under very high losses. The turnaround position is that all public sector banks are now making substantial profits now. How does this turnaround happen? The NDA govt took over the reins of the country in May 2014, at that time banks were in a really bad position. In the year 2015, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) conducted an Asset Quality Review (AQR) of all public sector banks, after this banks started making a lot of provisions in their loans. Non Performing Assets (NPA) in the banking sector jumped 80% in Financial Year (FY) 16. This happened because the NPA assets of all the banks were identified. The AQR created havoc on banks’ profitability, especially state-owned banks because the majority of…
Recent Bad Movies
For today’s weekend blog I am once again turning to Bollywood. In recent times, with so many problematic movies, Bollywood has shown that it doesn’t care about quality content. With the exception of a few movies, there are so many movies that make us wonder who gave them the green light in the first place. Driven by numbers, Bollywood is so obsessed with the box-office collection that it seems like it hardly gives any importance to the script. And, here are such movies that should have been scrapped during the discussion phase only. 1 Student of the Year 2 (2019) The movie’s plot made no sense. Two girls-Tara Sutaria and Ananya Pandey-fight the eternal female battle over one boy-Tiger Shroff. With no focus on education, every character is dressed like a model. Just because, it was backed by Karan Johar’s banner with nepotism kids. It was just a stupid movie….
Marketing Tricks
In today’s era, everything is all about marketing. How well can you promote or advertise your product? Rather how well can you convince your customer to buy your product? Many times, we go to a store to buy something and return back buying some different thing. Interestingly, we do not even have a justification for that. Ever thought what is the reason behind this? Honestly speaking, it is none of our faults, it’s just a trap set up by the marketing experts behind the scenes. Let us know some interesting secrets that marketing experts use to confuse us in the stores: 1 You will not believe that rebranding or slightly changing the recipe increases the value of the product. Just updating the looks of an ordinary cake into fancy muffins or cupcakes, brings glory to the cake. 2 Smartly composing the menus of restaurants. Using family images to make it…
OBC Quota
Friends, you must have read or heard in the media about seat reservations for Other Backward Class (OBC) candidates in elections, be it local bodies or any other elections. It has been going on for a long time, and in the end, Supreme Court (SC) had to intervene. As local body elections in Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Maharashtra were to take place in 2022. SC had formulated some guidelines last year regarding, if the States want to add quota additional quota for OBC candidates, then the States to complete the ‘Triple Test’ procedure to enable OBC reservations in local polls. Now, what is this triple test? In March last year, the SC had laid down the triple test or conditions for the State govt. Need to satisfy before they can notify quotas for OBCs in local body elections. These triple conditions are: 1 Setting up a dedicated commission to conduct…
Bridging Generation Gap
In my yesterday’s blog, I wrote about ‘Generation Gap’. Today I am writing about ‘Bridging Generation Gap’. Once we understand that the generation gap exists across all generations, it can be bridged. We have had it with our parents, our kids have it too and so will their kids. It cannot be avoided because society evolves across generations, becomes more open, cultures merge and adapt, and so on. The issue is not just a household issue, in many ways, whatever generations coexist, the issue exists. For example, even in your workplace, you may have a different thought process about doing things and the young generation may differ. Your kids or grandkids may complain about old bosses who refuse to change or adapt to new ways of doing things. So, it has to be acknowledged and bridged to make life easier all around. Some Tips The generation gap can be managed…
Generation Gap
It is an often-repeated word-GENERATION GAP. When we find we are unable to get through to next-generation or decipher their behavior, we say this word and rely on it. It helps to put a whole lot of unexplained stuff under the gambit of the generation gap. So what is the generation gap? The Older Gap The generation gap is not necessarily only in the age between the older and the current generation. It is also in thinking, attitude, approach to life, and many other aspects. Most often, it is just that the two sides are just not able to see things in the same way. At times, it is just that ego getting in the way of not wanting to see things from the other’s perspective. Sometimes, it is also a matter of the older generation not being able to trust the younger ones. It could also be the inability…
Indian Comic Sitcoms
Comedy TV serials in 90s and early 2000s were the golden periods of clean humour. While today’s comedy movies and shows (like the one done by Kapil Sharma) function on the problematic and regressive themes under the disguise of humour. The era of the 90s and early 2000s was completely different. Unlike today, the shows and movies of that era did not rely on the sexiest or regressive jokes. Here is the list of comedy shows from the glory days that are timeless and insanely hilarious: 1 Dekh Bhai Dekh– It was one of the most popular comedy shows on Indian television. Every Character of the Diwan family made us fall in love. From Shekhar Suman, Farida Jalal, Navin Nischal to Sushma Seth, every character was insanely funny. 2 Tu Tu Main Main– Much before Ekta Kapoor came up with twisted saas-bahu relationships. Reema Lagoo & Supriya Pilgaonkar gave us…
Congress Chintan Shivir
After the recent debacle in the assembly elections held in 5 states, the Congress party held its ‘Chintan Shivir’ at Udaipur( Rajasthan). Connect with people, agitate on street, and usher in organizational reforms, these three broad themes figured in the Udaipur declaration that was adopted by the Congress party. The Shivir was held so that the party can be battle-ready for the next round of assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The declaration also talked about fixing a retirement age for elected representatives but did not mention any cut-off age. In the Chintan Shivir, Congress outlines plans for the revival of the party, here are a few highlights: 1One family, one ticket rule, with the exception only for another family member working in the party for the last 5 years. My comment – this way family rule will continue because most of the Congress leaders have their family…
