Happenings 2023

The year 2022 has just got over, and we have entered the year 2023. In this blog, I am listing some big happenings in 2023. These events are apart from the annual events across the world.

1 Coronation of King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort– Queen Elizabeth passed away in September 2022 after a reign of 70 years. King Charles II’s coronation will happen on 6t May 2023, at Westminster Abbey, as announced by Buckingham Palace. Camilla, the Queen Consort, will be crowned alongside the King. A global live telecast of the event is likely, as it is a rare event happening in a long time.

2 State Elections– In the run-up to the 2024 general elections, India will have state elections coming up in Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Karnataka, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Telangana, and J & K. None of these dates are out yet. However, if you are in any of these states, to make sure that you can cast your ballot, kindly ensure that your Voter ID is valid and that your name is part of the electoral rolls.

3 FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023– Men’s World Cup 2022 just concluded in Qatar, where Argentina beat France in the final. The Women’s Football World Cup will take place from 20th July to 20th August in Australia and New Zealand. This tournament will also be telecasted live across the world.

4 Asian Games 2022– It was supposed to be held in Hongzhou, China in September 2022. However, the event was postponed due to Covid 19 pandemic since travel to China was difficult. Now the Games are scheduled to take place from 23rd September to 8th October 2023. India will be participating in this event, which will be telecasted live.

5 ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup– This quadrennial event will happen in India during October and November. Ten teams will compete against each other in the round-robin playoffs before proceeding to quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. As always, live telecasts will happen for matches being held across the country, though the exact dates, venues, etc., are yet to be announced.

6 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup– This tournament takes place in Odisha, India from 13th January to 29th January 2023, with 16 teams competing for the glory of the Hockey World Cup. India is also scheduled to participate and is currently in Pool D with England, Spain, and Wales. Belgium is the defending Champion. One could combine a live match with an Odisha tour to see Jagannath Puri Mandir, the beaches, and the Konark Sun Temple.

7 ICC Women’s T20 world cup– This will be held from 10th February to the 26th, in South Africa, with ten teams vying for the top honour. One could book tickets for the tour of South Africa, and also watch matches.

8 Women’s IPL– The men’s IPL is happening for last so many years. With some good performances from the Indian women’s team, there has been a clamour for women’s IPL. It is finally happening in March 2023, with the modalities still being worked out.

9 IAAF World Championship– These days, we look forward to the Athletics championship, with Neeraj Chopra raising our hopes. The IAAF championships are happening from 19th August to 27th August 2023, in Budapest, Hungary. It will be a great time to visit Europe as the winter would be over, and one can combine sports with leisure.

10 Grand Prix of Bharat- for motorsport lovers in India, the first time Bharat Grand Prix (moto GP) will be held in India, in 2023. The Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida will be the venue.

11 G20 Summits– During India’s presidency of G20, India will host few summits. The main summit will happen from 9th-10th September 2023 in New Delhi. The list of invitees will include the 20 permanent G20 members,  other invitees, and around 10-12 world bodies. Other events are happening across the country in Kolkata, Pune, Thiruvanathapuram, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Chennai.
