India-T20 WC Winner

Friends, in a rare exception case, I am writing about cricket on a weekday; generally, I write about sports and other filmy topics on the weekend.

So yesterday India won the T20 Cricket World Cup in Ahmedabad by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs. While winning the World Cup, India broke many myths, first being that no home team has ever won the T20 World Cup, and second, no team has ever defended the title won in the earlier tournament. Even odds were not in favour of India, as India had a record of 1-3 against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup. By winning the 2026 T20 World Cup, India has become the only team to win T20 World Cup three times. West Indies (2012 and 2016) and England (2010 and 2022) have won it twice.

There are many other records which team India created yesterday:

  • India’s total of 255 for 5 against New Zealand in the final in Ahmedabad is the highest by any team in a knockout (playoff) match in T20Is. Their 253 for 7 against England in the Semi-final was the previous highest. It is also the third highest by any team in a men’s T20 World Cup.
  • India’s win margin of 96 runs against New Zealand is their biggest, by runs in the men’s T20 World Cup.
  • Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling figures of 4 for 15, also his maiden four-wicket haul in T 20Is. He is only the second bowler to claim 4 wickets in the final of the men’s T20 World Cup. Ajantha Mendis (Sri Lanka) took 4 for 12 against the West Indies in 2012.
  • India became the first team to score 250+ scores in two successive matches. They scored 253 against England in the semi-final, and 256 against New Zealand in the finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
  • Abhishek Sharma’s score of 50 in just 18 balls against New Zealand in the finals is the fastest by a batter in T20 World Cup knockout. The previous best was Finn Allen against South Africa and Jacob Betheel against India in the Semi-finals earlier in this World Cup.
  • Sanju Samson’s score of 89 against New Zealand is the highest by any batsman in the T20 World cup final. He also became thrird batsmen to score 50s in both Semis and finals of T20 World Cup. Others are Shahid Afridi in 2009 and Virat Kohli in 2014.
  • 92 for 0 India’s total in the power play is the joint highest by any team in the men’s T20 World Cup, equaling West Indies’ 92 for 1 against Afghanistan in 2024.
  • Three consecutive 80+ scores for Samsom, having scored 97* against West Indies, and 89 against England in the previous 2 games, and *9 against New Zealand in yesterday’s match.
  • 24 Sixes Samson hit in this World Cup are the highest by any batsman in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.

Key reasons for India’s 2026 T20 World Cup victory include:

  • Fearless & Aggressive Tactics– Team India implemented a high-risk, high-rewards strategy that paid off, allowing batsmen to play freely and post record-breaking scores, including 250 for 5 in the final.
  • Historic batting Form– India became the first team to score 250+ in successive T20I matches, showcasing unparalleled power-hitting, highlighted by Abhishek Sharma’s 18-ball fifty and Sanju Samson’s 89 in the final.
  • Clinical Bowling Attack– Led by Jasprit Bumrah, who took 4/15 in the final, the bowling unit remained dominant throughout the tournament, restricting New Zealand to 159 in the championship match.
  • Home Advantage & Resilience– Playing on home soil (Ahmedabad), India overcame the pressure of previous final losses to secure a dominant, record-breaking win. They became the first team to win the T20 World Cup while hosting it.
  • Batting depth & Power– Players like Shivam Dubey and others provided finishing power, with the team scoring the highest ever total in the T20 World Cup Final.

Players who were Key Contributors in the Final:

 Batsmen

  • Sanju Samson– He emerged as India’s leading run-scorer with 321 runs @ an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37. In the finals, he played a masterful innings of 89 in 46 balls.
  • Abhishek Sharma– Despite early tournament struggles, he delivered in the finals with a rapid 52 off just 21 balls. He reached his 50 in just 17 balls, the fastest ever in a T20 World Cup final, helping India reach a massive 92/0 in the powerplay (first 6 overs)
  • Ishan Kishan– Moving to the number three spot, he maintained momentum with a quickfire 54 off 25 balls in the final. He finished the tournament with 317 runs, including a vital 77 against Pakistan in the group stage.
  • Shivam Dube– He provided a crucial late flourish in the final, smashing an unbeaten 26 of 8 balls, including 42 in the final over.

Bowlers

  • Jasprit Bumrah (Player of the Match)- He finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 14 wickets, other bowler is Varun Chakaravarthy. Bumrah’s spell of 4/15 in the final set a new record for the best bowling figures by a pacer in T20 World Cup.
  • Varun Chakaravarthy– He became the joint leading wicket-taker. In the final, he took the vital wicket of New Zealand’s top scorer, Tim Seifert (52), in the final to halt their chase.
  • Axar Patel– He played a pivotal role in the final, taking 3/27 and removing the dangerous Finn Alley early in the innings. He was also noted for his exceptional fielding, taking game-changing catches during the semi-final against England.

In the end, Team India did a fantastic job throughout the T20 World Cup tournament; they remained undefeated during the group stage, and their only loss came in the group 8 stage when they lost to South Africa. BRAVO TEAM INDIA.
