Iran Crisis-Indian Advisory

As of 15th January 2026, IRAN is facing a severe internal crisis characterised by nationwide anti-government protests and escalating security crackdown. The Indian government is keeping a close watch on the situation, as there are thousands of Indians staying /working there.

CURRENT SITUATION in IRAN

  • Widespread Unrest: Protests began in late December 2025 due to the collapsing economy and a record fall in Iranian Rial. These have now spread to all 31 provinces, evolving into a broader movement against clerical rule. This is happening because over the past few years, the Iranian government has put-restrictions on civil liberties, there is governance dissatisfaction, and crackdowns on dissent.
  • High Death Toll: It has been reported that more than 2500 people have been killed in the government’s crackdown as of mid January 2026.
  • International Tensions: The USA President Donald Trump has warned of “very strong action” and military strikes if the Iranian regime continues its deadly crackdown on protestors. Some USA and British personnel have already begun withdrawing from regional bases in anticipation of potential strikes.

Then there is Economic collapse and social insecurity, Iran’s economy is under severe strain due to:

  • Long standing international sanctions
  • Currency devaluation
  • High inflation and unemployment

Economic desperation frequently fuels street-level unrest, looting, and strikes. In such conditions, foreigners may face:

  • Banking disruptions
  • Shortage of essentials
  • Arbitrary restrictions on movement

Secondly, Iran is a central actor in West Asian geopolitics. Any internal stability is magnified by:

  • Regional military tensions
  • Proxy conflicts
  • Risk of targeted infrastructure attacks

During the periods unrest, Iranian authorities have previous imposed:

  • Internet blackouts
  • Message app bans
  • Transport restriction

Due to all the above factors, the Indian government has issued advisory to all Indians in Iran, leave Iran by all available means. Such advisories are not routine, diplomatic formalities; they are issued only when by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) assesses that civilian safety could be seriously compromised due to rapidly evolving internal or external threats.

Nature of Advisory: What the Indian Government is Signaling

Indian government advisory generally fall into three categories:

1 Cautionary travel warnings

2 Restricted movement advisories

3 Evacuation or exit advisories

The current advisory related to Iran falls closer to the third category, where Indian citizens are encouraged to leave voluntarily while  commercial and land routes are operational. This is crucial distinction-history shows that once conditions deteriorate further, evacuation becomes logistically and diplomatically far more difficult.

Key elements typically emphasized include

  • Avoidance of public gatherings and protests
  • Regular contact with the Indian Embassy.
  • Readiness to move at short notice
  • Preference for early exit over delayed evacuation.

Why the Advisory is Especially Serious for Indians

India has diverse population in Iran, including:

  • Students pursuing medical and religious studies
  • Businesspersons,  and traders
  • Religious pilgrims visiting shrines in Qom and Mashha
  • Seafarers and technical professionals

Presently, India maintains cordial ties with Iran, but internal law-and-order situations limit diplomatic intervention. Embassies can provide assistance only when:

  • Local authorities permit movement
  • Transport infrastructure functions
  • Communication lines remain open

An early advisory is therefore aimed at preventing a humanitarian emergency.

The Indian government’s advisory to its citizens in Iran is a precautionary but serious warning, rooted in an objective assessment of Iran’s internal instability and its potential to escalate without notice.. For Indian nationals the message is very clear: Leaving early while option exist, is safer than waiting for an official evacuation amid chaos.
