Friends, in the English language, PARONYMS are words that are similar in form, spelling, or sound but have different meanings. They often derive from the same root word, and their resemblance can cause confusion, even for native English speakers.
There are two main senses of the term;
- Words from the same root: For example, adult and adulthood.
- Confusable words: Words that sound or look alike but have distinct meanings, such as affect and effect.
Here are few examples of Paronyms:
1 Affect-to influence; and Effect– the result.
2 Eminent-famous/respected; and Imminent-about to happen.
3 Allusion-indirect reference; and Illusion-false impression.
4 Adapt-adjust; and Adopt-take as one’s own.
5 Advice– recommendation (noun); and Advise-to recommend (verb).
6 Compliment-praise; and Complement– completes or goes well with.
7 Conscience– moral sense; and Conscious– awake/aware.
8 Deduce-reason logically; and Induce– persuade or cause.
9 Discreet– careful, tactful; and Discrete– separate, distinct.
10 Ensure– make certain; and Insure– protect financially.
11 Farther– physical distance; and Further– figurative distance/extent.
12 Historic– very important; and Historical– related to history.
13 Intensive– concentrated; and Extensive– broad, covering much.
14 Ingenious– clever, inventive; and Ingenuous-innocent, naïve.
15 Judicial-related to judges; and Judicious– wise, sensible.
16 Morale– spirit, confidence; and Moral– lesson or principle.
17 Official– authorized; and Officious– meddling, to eager to interfere.
18 Persecute– mistreat; and Prosecute– take to court.
19 Personal– private, individual; and Personnel– staff/employees.
20 Prescribe– recommend/authorized; and Proscribe– forbid.
21 Principal– head of school/main; and Principle– rule or belief.
22 Stationary– not moving; and Stationery– paper, pens, office supplies.
23 Respectful– showing respect; and Respective– belonging individually to each.
24 Successful– achieving goals; and Successive– following one after another.
25 Virtual– almost/online: and Virtuous– morally good.
26 Accept– to take or receive; and Except- Excluding or apart from.
27 Collision– a crash or clash; and Collusion– a secret agreement often for illegal purpose.
28 Industrial– Relating to industry or manufacturing; and Industrious– Hard working and diligent.
29 Sensitive– easily affected or emotional; and Sensible– Practical, reasonable, or showing good judgment.
30 Adjacent– lying near; and Adjoining– means next to.
31 Alter– modify; and Altar– where a marriage takes place.
32 Among– prize was divided among winners; and Amongst– amongst the trees we found a hidden path.
33 Bail– surety for releasing criminal from custody; and Bale– stack of crop.
34 Bare– an empty space; and Bear-an animal.
35 Brake– used for stopping the vehicle; and Break– like don’t break the glass.
