Monday Post

Some Interesting news items on this Monday of July 2018.

  1. This news relates to Senior citizens. Recently Bombay High Court ruled that t elderly parents can take back a share in their property given to son as a gift if he fails to look after them or harasses them. The Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizens Act 2007 makes it a legal obligation of children to provide for their legal parents, abandoning them is criminal offence.                                                                                                                      -Biological, adoptive or step parent, grand parents or senior citizen over 60 years who can not maintain themselves, can claim maintenance.           -Adult Children or grand children(both male & female) are liable to pay maintenance.                                                                                                             -Senior citizens who do not have children can claim maintenance from an adult relative who is in possession of their property or will inherit the property on their death.                                                                                          Now a days there are so many instances where the senior citizen are living on the mercy of their children, for them law is very helpful. Even with law in place, the special  tribunal set up for this purpose can grant maintenance of up to Rs 10,000 per month. This amount may be sufficient for elderly citizens living in villages or small town, but in bigger city with this amount it is very difficult to survive. Yes, it is a step in very positive direction to safe guard the living conditions of Sr citizens. In my personal opinion, the govt should start the pension schemes for the senior citizens who retire from non pensionable jobs.
  2. There are elections going to place in our neighbouring country Pakistan later this month. While campaigning every PM aspirant from any political party in Pakistan is quoting our PM Narendra Modi, and are saying that please vote  for me, if I am elected , I will work like Modi and improve the condition of the nation like what Modi has done for India. Leaders all over the Pakistan and other parts of the world are accepting that Modi has done remarkably well and has improved the status of India on all fronts. Here in our country some leaders from opposition parties are saying that Modi is trying to make our country as Hindu Pakistan.Do these understand, what they are talking. Indirectly they are trying to demean the status of India in the world . Presently India has become world’s 5th largest economy under NDA rule. Agreed, BJP which is the main party in NDA  is a right wing party whose main motto is Hindutva, which  is a way of living. But the opposition leaders term this as appeasement to Hindus, so  BJP is non secular. But the same leaders who practice appeasement of Muslims are calling themselves secular, which is height of hypocrisy.
  3. World of Sports- when FIFA or Football world cup  started last month, every sports journalist was talking about Germany, Argentina, Spain, Brazil as the prime contender for lifting the world cup on 15th of July 2018. So what happens, actually none of these teams reached the last 4 stage ie semi finals, and who reached the semi finals were France, Belgium, England and Croatia. France beat Belgium and Croatia beat England in the semi finals. So on 15th July, it was Croatia v/s France in the finals, where France won with  4-2 margin. Both semi finals were very engrossing and it was sheer brilliance of France and Croatia which won the match for them. In the final 4-2 margin looks big, but match was very interesting and Croatia fought right till the end and did not give up. Croatia as a country got established in only 1991 and their current population is about 4 millions, and that country reaching finals of Football world cup is really creditable. It means  Football must be a big passion there.                                                                                                          Continuing with sports, now let us talk of Tennis and in particular Wimbeldon Grand slam Championship. When this tournament started on 2nd July this year , what was the prediction by sports journalists and even bookoies. The hot favourite to win  the championship was Roger Federar and Rafeal Nadal in men’s section, and as per seedings they were supposed to clash in the finals, and in ladies section every one was sure that Sareena Williams will lift the trophy, although she was seeded 25, and most probable her opponent in the final was predicted as Simona Halep, who was seeded 1 and who last month has won French Open Championship. In reality what happens,  Halep and Federar were waylaid before even the semi finals and Nadal lost in the semi finals, but only Williams    true to predictions reached the finals, it was Angelique Kerber who reached finals in ladies section and Novak Djkovic  and Kevin Anderson in men’s section.   In the beginning no one would have thought that Djkovic and Anderson will clash in the finals. Both the finals were not keenly contested and easily Angelique Kerber beat Sareena Williams & Noval Djkovic beat Kevin Anderson. One more thing happened yesterday, Wimbeldon is third Grand Slam of the year, and in this year 2018 all the three grand slam have different winners, which means no player could win 2 slam out of three, In Australian open it was Roger Federar (men) and Caroline Wozniaki (women), In French Open it was Rafeal Nadal (men) & Simona Halep ( women) and now in Wimbeldon- Novk Djkovic (men) and Angelique Kerber (women). Let us see what happens in US open in September.

I totally agree with law /act concerning sr. Citizens… The beneficiary next gen has to be caring towards their retired elders… However regarding your views on Pension arrangement by govt for sr. Citizen… Prima facie I am not against it but it is just not possible… Given the population size and complexities which exists in India can not make it functional for any govt in long run unless govt borrow and leave behind heap of debt for next govt/ generations… All the govt realized it long ago and hence they promote the concept of saving enough, invest wisely in young age to be self sufficient in old age… Even in govt job the rule from April 2004 is changed drastically.. The system of ‘Defined benefits’ is changed to ‘Defined contribution’ . It means the employer(Govt) will contribute equal to employees contribution to pension fund and with interest whatever is the corpus gathered at retirement will be given to employee and nothing more than that… Once 30-40 years are gone and the generation shift happens govt will be greatly relieved from ever increasing burdan of pensions with earlier system of ‘Defined Benefits’ in which pension is linked with inflation… I agree to this change as everybody should be made responsible for their needs satisfaction.. This is independent of act for sr.citizen care with which I totally agree…Regards…

Totally agree with you, what they have suggested is going to take ages, may be 2 generations, and that too if successive govts are true in this respect. But people born after independence and upto 1970 are/ will be the great sufferer.

Very frankly the taxes we pay should safeguard our old age as happens abroad, not the state putting the onus on our children which I think is just passing the buck..
