Rahul Gandhi-Love for China

Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress, has often faced criticism from political opponents, particularly the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), for what they call his ‘soft stance’ or ‘Love for China’. These allegations stem from his public statements, past meetings with Chinese officials, and his frequent criticism of the Indian government’s policies towards China. However, supporters argue that his narrative is politically motivated and oversimplifies his position on India-China relations.

Origins of the Controversy

1 2017 Doklam Standoff

  • During 2017 Doklam standoff between Indian and Chinese troops, Rahul Gandhi met with Chinese diplomats, including Chinesse Ambassador Luo Zhaohui, in New Delhi.
  • BJP leaders accused him of holding ‘secret meetings’ with Chinese officials at a sensitive times.
  • Rahul Gandhi defended himself saying it was part of his diplomatic outreach as a political leader and not clandestine.

2 2018 Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

  • Rahul Gandhi undertook a pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet (controlled by China).
  • Though it was supposed to be religious trip, BJP leaders claimed it signified his ‘affinity for China’, and accused of him of meeting Chinese leaders during the trip, while Congress party maintained it was purely spiritual.

Statements Criticising Indian Policy on China

Rahul Gandhi has often criticized PM Narendra Modi’s handling of the India-China border tensions, especially after the Galwan valley clash in 2020, where 20 Indian soldiers were killed.

  • He accused Modi of “surrendering Indian territory’ and ‘being afraid to confront China’.
  • His frequent use of terms like “Chinese aggression” and allegations that “China has entered Indian land” have been used by critics to paint him as “echoing Beijing’s line”.

Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) Case

  • The RGF, linked to Gandhi family, allegedly received donations from Chinese Embassy in India, and Chinese companies during 2005-2009 (UPA regime).
  • BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of being influenced by these Chinese connections, although Congress claimed these were legal donations for social development projects, but no such details of such projects are available in public domain.

Rahul Gandhi’s Defence

He denies any undue inclination toward China and frames his stance as;

  • Patriotic criticism of the government’s handling of China.
  • A call for transparency on territorial disputes, demanding clarity from PM on Chinese incursions.
  • He claims BJP’s narrative is ‘diversionary politics’ to avoid discussing real issues like unemployment, and economic distress.

The problem with Rahul Gandhi is that instead of believing Indian government’s statement and replies in Parliament, he believes in what Chinese government says, what American and other foreign  media say, and he issues statements without verifying the facts.

Even yesterday, the Supreme Court (SC) was hearing Rahul Gandhi’s challenge to Allahabad High Court order that had refused to  quash a trial court’s summons in a defamation case. During his ‘Bharat Jodo’yatra in 2022 he alleged that Chinese Army  had ‘captured 2000 sq km of Indian territory, ‘killed 20 Indian soldiers, and thrashed our jawans in Arunachal Pradesh.

The SC slammed Rahul Gandhi through his counsel “ Do you have any credible materials to prove your charges of Chinese Army capturing our   territory measuring 2000 sq km, and have you gone there and seen it yourself. If you are true Indian you will not make such charges against Indian Army and government. When there is a conflict across the border, is it unusual to have casualties on either side? You , being a leader of opposition in Parliament…why don’t you ask the question in Parliament. Why do you have to say this in media or social media posts”. In the end the SC refused to stay the order of Allahabad High Court.

In so many other such defamation cases, Rahul had to tender apology to the courts. This is because without thinking he makes silly political statements which backfire on him.

Rahul Gandhi’s love for China has become a national issue, and the perception of his softness on China due to past meetings, donations to RGF, and his repeated highlighting of Chinese incursions. This issue reflects the larger trend of national security being politicized in Indian  electoral discourse.

In the end will Rahul Gandhi ever learn, that speaking and making allegations with any substantial proof is of no use, and if you have to survive in the present Indian political scene, he should raise the issues in the Parliament as per the guidelines laid down and not to issue statements on social media to be in limelight.
