Caste Politics

For last few days Maharashtra state is reeling under caste politics and opposition parties are  doing the work of adding fuel to the fire. The fact of the matter is that every year on 1st Jan the Dalits assemble in a village named Bhima-Koregaon near Pune to celebrate  the anniversary of the defeat of Peshwa army in the hands of British army mainly consisting of Dalit Soldiers, but this year on 29th Dec some people from Hindutva forces( followers of Peshwas) ransacked the samadhi of  Goving Gaikwad  (from Mahar caste-a dalit) who is credited with performing last rites Sambhajiraje Bhosle(son of Shivaji), as no upper caste hindu was ready to touch his body due to fear of British. My views on this affair:

1. By celebrating the victory of British over Peshwas, what Dalit want to prove that they were better  warriors then Peshwas. I do not understand why no one took objections to this annual rituals in independent India. Or it was side tracked due to vote bank politics.
2. Upper Caste Hindus led by Sambhaji  Bhide (aka as Bhide Guruji) and Milind Ekbote have been agitating for years and believe that Sambhaji’s last rites were performed by Marathas and they are demanding a Govt sponsored study to establish the fact and correct the history.
3. But it was wrong on the part of followers of Bhide and Ekbote to damage the samadhi , which was revered by Dalits.
4. Now Dalits are on streets with  the result that they are holding city like Mumbai to ransom. Yesterday part of Mumbai was affected and today most parts of the city have come to stand still, no traffic on the road, shops closed, Metro, Local Trains and Bus Services are also affected.
5. Govt was knowing that today  there will be bandh sponsored by Dalits, which have backing from other opposition parties. As BJP is still considered as party of Upper Caste hindus. But no action was taken to disperse the agitating crowd, so that normal working day life of citizens is not disturbed and they are not put to any inconvenience.
6. After the results of Gujarat elections, where Congress played the caste card and gained some additional seats and votes. I had inkling that during this year all the political parties who are opposing BJP are going  to play caste politics to gain extra mileage for gathering votes. And this will keep on going for all the state assemblies elections  this year  and  next general elections in 2019.
7. Even after 70 years of independence, we are still in clutches of caste and reservations, which is a big blot on our democracy. At the hind sight, I feel that our founding fathers of constitution blundered in  allowing caste based reservations for few years after gaining freedom. But these few years have become 7 decades and do not know how many more decades our future generations will face this malice.
8. Recently I read some where on the net  that when Sardar Patel came to know about Ambedkar wants to  insert caste based reservations in the Constitution, then he told PM Nehru that  on one side we are writing  that as per Constitutions all citizens are equal then why caste based reservations. He suggested that if the reservations are to permitted then it should be on the basis of economic conditions of the citizen and not on caste basis. But the arrogant Nehru, who hated Patel, sided with Ambedkar and caste reservations clause came into the Constitution. Then Patel remarked ” Ok Jawaharlalji you are not agreeing with my point of view, but  future generations of this country will be cursing you for doing this”. How true his statement have become, as  today caste reservations and  caste politics malice has ruined our polity and country.
9. With  reservations clause in the constitution, Ambedkar became messiah of Dalits and in return they gave him Demi God status.

Let us see how Modi govt is going to tackle this issue or his govt also will come under pressure for reservations, which they have successfully handled uptil now as they only talk about development based issues and their slogan is “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas”
