Good Chewing and Brain Health

Chewing is one of the most basic activities we perform every day, usually without giving much thought. Yet growing scientific evidence suggests that the simple act of chewing may have effects beyond digestion. Regular chewing stimulates muscles, nerves and sensory pathways connected with the brain, and researchers are increasingly interested in whether good chewing habits could contribute to maintaining brain functions as we age. This does not mean that chewing more can prevent dementia or other neurological diseases. However, there is a plausible connection between healthy chewing, brain stimulation, nutrition and cognitive health.

How does chewing affect the brain?

Chewing is surprisingly complex neurological activity. It involves the jaw muscles, teeth, tongue and facial nerves, while the brain coordinates the rhythm and force of each bite. When we chew, sensory signals are sent from structures in the mouth and jaw to areas of the brain involved in movement, sensation and coordination. The activity also engages brain regions associated with attention and arousal.

Some studies have found that chewing can temporarily increase cerebral blood flow in certain brain regions. Researchers have therefore investigated whether maintaining normal chewing function throughout life might be beneficial for brain health.

The teeth-brain connection

Tooth loss can reduce chewing ability, particularly when it is not adequately restored with dentures, bridges or implants. Several studies have found associations between poor oral health, tooth loss and a higher risk of cognitive decline.

Does chewing increase blood flow to the brain?

Chewing activates the muscles and sensory nerves around the jaw. This activity can influence circulation and brain activity. However, increased blood flow during chewing should not be interpreted as proof that chewing prevents Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

Is chewing gum good for the brain?

Chewing gum has attracted considerable interest because it provides repetitive  chewing without requiring food. Some studies have suggested that chewing gum can temporarily improve alertness, attention or certain aspects of cognitive performance. The effects, however, are generally modest and may be short-lived.

The importance of eating properly

A person who can chew comfortably is more likely to eat a diverse diet containing vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, dairy or other protein sources and healthy fats. Good nutrition is strongly associated with healthy ageing and cardiovascular health, which in turn are important for maintaining brain health.

Actually, brain health depends on a much larger collection of factors, including: Blood pressure control, diabetes management, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, a balanced diet, avoiding smoking, limiting excessive alcohol, maintaining social and mental activity, treating hearing and vision problems, managing cardiovascular risk factors, and maintaining good oral health. Good chewing should therefore be considered one small component of overall healthy ageing rather than a stand-alone treatment or preventive strategy.

There is no need to deliberately chew excessively; instead, focus on maintaining normal, comfortable chewing ability. Eat a varied diet, chew food properly rather than swallowing it quickly, maintaining good dental hygiene is more important.

In the end, good chewing is potentially beneficial for brain health, but it is not a brain-protection therapy. Chewing activates neural pathways, may temporarily influence brain blood flow and activity, and helps people maintain adequate nutrition. The most sensible approach is to protect both mouth and brain: maintain healthy teeth and gums, preserve chewing function, eat a nutritious diet and follow established lifestyle measures that protect cardiovascular and cognitive health.

Lastly, good chewing is one of the factors that helps in keeping good brain health.
