In the recent times there have been enough news on the education system and institutions, and they are quite disturbing . There are news about murders in institutions, molestation in school/colleges and many more. There are no checks on the working of Educational Institutions and whatever checks are in place, all those bodies are inefficient and corrupt, are not doing their jobs. What is the fun of passing the bill like Right to Education when Educational Institutions do not follow the basic guideline laid down by the law.
In our Constitution even, it has been mentioned that the state has to take care of the basic education of the student. But over the years the education system has deteriorated so much that people are disgusted with the way it is being operated. The Education which was supposed to be state’s responsibility, but presently it looks like state has washed their hands off from this responsibility. Now the Education has become a business, and big business houses & Trusts run by Politicians/their associates run this business and their main aim is how to make profits.
I am giving below the few incidents to support my views on the Education System:
- Last week, in a school located at Gurgaon in Haryana a boy student of 9 years was murdered by the crew member of school bus. This incident created a shock wave all over. It happened in a very reputed chain of school, which is known as Ryan group of Schools, which has branches all over India and abroad. The person who committed the crime was immediately arrested, and within next 2 days top officials of the school were also arrested . Even promoters had to apply for anticipatory bail. This type of incident only indicate the school management failed in its duty on two counts- first when the bus crew member was hired his credential were not checked properly and secondly why there was no security present neat the toilet block where the child was murdered. It is a high end school where the fees charged must be running in thousand of rupee per month and surprisingly there were no CCTV cameras installed in school premises.
- You read in newspapers about child molestation cases in school premises/school buses, in which teaching and non teaching staff of school are found to be involved. Basically school takes the easy way out and give the contract to outsider firm to operate school buses and even security and when some untoward incident happens they put the blame on contractor. But school management forget that the parents entrust their children and their safety to school management, and it is their duty to safe guard the lives of children.
- I remember few years back, there was fire in school van and few children died due to that incident. There was much hue and cry in Mumbai and Govt was forced to draft new safety rules for the school buses and their operations. First thing Govt specified that all the school buses operating will be of yellow in colour, will have proper grills on the windows, buses will also have emergency exit, and also specified the numbers of children bus can ferry depending upon the type of bus. There were much resistance from the bus operators but the govt did not relent and the operators were forced to carry out all the changes.
Now let us see some of the malice prevailing in higher education
- In Mumbai city, generally results of 10th class are declared by mid June and within one week the process of filling forms for admissions in class 11th in Junior Colleges begin. You will be surprised to know that most of the time this process takes 5 to 6 weeks, but this year till last week, ie end of 1st week of Sept 2017, the process was not over, and mind the process is all computerised and form are filled on line, and still it took more than 10 weeks.
- This year because of delay in results of the courses conducted by Mumbai University, the matter went up to High Court and court give judgement that all the results should be declared by July end, but till today (14th Sept) still many results are pending, and now adding salt to the injury it has been announced that almost 28,000 answer sheets are missing. Imagine the plight of the students who are either going to miss the next academic year or may be the start of their professional career, depending upon the exam for which they had appeared.
- Now let us talk about professional career education. The fees per year in the govt aided Engineering colleges is about Rs 50- 80,000 per year and in non aided private colleges it may run into few lakhs per year. In the medical field the govt aided college fees is in the range of 60 to 80,000 per year but in non aided pvt medical colleges it can vary fro Rs 5 Lakhs to may be Rs 20 Lakhs per year. Now imagine if a budding doctor in pvt medical college spends Rs 5- 10 lakhs on av per year, that means in next 5 years he/she will spend Rs 25 to 50 lakhs. Naturally after MBBS, student will do Masters and spend more money. Then it is but natural the person concerned is not going to practice ethically, as he/she has to recover the money spent on the education. Then in the end we only blame that medical treatment has become costly.
- Friends, do you know that almost 40,000 seats in various Engineering colleges, and almost 10,000 seats in various Medical colleges across Maharashtra are not filled. The reason being there are more private colleges than required, most of the pvt Engineering/Medical Colleges are run by the politicians/their family trusts in anticipation that they will make huge profits by charging very high fees, because they are operated by Politicians , they manage to get the permissions from govt and affiliations from technical/medical bodies.
So, friends, basically our Education system is in deep mess and it needs improvement very fast. Unless govt comes forward and start investing money, the day is not far when it will so happen that higher education will go beyond the means of common and middle class person and the professional education will be the prerogative of rich only.
So, what you say my friends.
Awaiting your feed backs and comments.
