English Language

Today I am writing on totally different topic, and I have never attempted to write on this type of topic earlier and the topic is, some funny elements of English language. Although it is very simple language for learning but it is really hard to master the same. Enjoy these three examples :

A.Somethings never make any sense :

People call English crazy language also as there is no egg in eggplant, no ham in hamburger, neither pine or apple in pineapple. English muffins and French fries were never invented in England and France. Boxing ring is square and guinea pig is  neither a guinea or nor a pig.

Why is that writers write but fingers never fing, hammers do not ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth then why isn’t the plural of booth, beeth. One goose-2 geese, but one mouse is not 2 meese. One index -2 indices. Now if you have bunch of odds and evens and get rid of all but one, then the remaining one is odd or even.

Now if teacher’s taught, why preachers never paught. If vegetarian eats vegetable then what does a humanitarian eat? People recite at play and play at recital. Material sent by ship is called cargo and sent by truck is called shipment.

Take the case where your house can burn up while burning down; you fill in a form by filling it out, and alarm goes off when it is on.

This language was invented by people and not by computers, which reflects the creativity of human race, which of course, is not a race at all. That’s why , when stars are out they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

B.Words with Double meaning:

  1. The bandage was wound around the wound.
  2. The farm was used to produce, produce.
  3. The dump was so full that it had refuse to accept more refuse.
  4. We must polish the Polish furniture.
  5. He could lead if he would get the lead out.
  6. The soldier decided to desert his dessert in desert.
  7. Since there was no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.
  8. When shot at Dove, dove into bushes.
  9. I did not object to the object.

10.There was row among the oarsmen about how to row.

11.They were too close to the door to close it.

  1. Buck does the funny thing when Does are present.

13.To help with the planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

  1. The wing was to strong to wind the sail.
  2. Upon seeing the tear in the painting, he shed a tear.
  3. I had to subject the subject to series of test

17.How can I intimate this to my intimate friend?

  1. The insurance was invalid for the invalid

Up is a strange Word

This two letter of English language has more meaning than any other two letter word.

  1. It is easy to understand Up meaning towards the sky or at the top of the list, but we awaken in the morning, why do we wake Up.
  2. At a meeting, why does the topic come Up? Why do we speak Up and why are officers Up for elections and why it is Up to the secretary to write Up the report?
  3. We call Up
  4. We lock Up the house, and fix Up the car.
  5. People stir Up trouble, line Up for tickets, work Up an appetite, and think Up
  6. To be dressed is on thing, but the be dressed Up is other.
  7. We open Up the shop in the morning, but close Up in the night.
  8. We seemed to be pretty mixed Up about Up.
  9. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding Up

10.When sun comes out, we say it is clearing Up.

11.When it does not for while, we say things are drying Up.

One could go on and on, if you are Up to it, you might try building Up a list of the many ways Up is used. It will take Up a lot of your time, but if you do not give Up, you may wind Up with a hundred  or more.

For now my time is Up, I will wrap Up.

English language is that way peculiar. Best example is But & Put.

  2. Bobby

Very few understand that the reason English is peculiar is that it is not a language by itself but made up of words from the Anglo-Saxon, Norwegian, Celtic and Latin. Because of the postpone is one word unlike pre-fix which is why those who don’t know English use the word prepone, which is wrong.
