Nepotism 2

Yesterday in my blog, I had mentioned in brief about nepotism in Bollywood. Other than Film Industry nepotism is rampant in  Politics. You are well aware that politics and acting does not require any educational qualifications, hence nepotism is prevalent in these fields. In other field you need some basic education like if Doctor’s children wants to become doctor then they have to get education in medical field, same is the case with lawyers, engineers, businessmen, any technical field in film making. For some other field like writing a person has to have basic education plus in born  talent, as every one can not become writer.

Let us see some big cases of nepotism in politics:

  1. Congress Party- Jawaharlal Nehru, first PM of the country gave proper training to his daughter Indira Gandhi in politics and  govt protocol. As Indira Gandhi was first made Nehru’s companion and official host, she was also made Congress party President and also a MP. After Nehru’s Death, she was first inducted into Lalbahadur Shastri’s cabinet as I & B minister. Then after Shashtri’s death Congress party stalwarts just that Morarji Desai should not become PM, they propped up Indira and made sure that she became PM. But after few years Indira Gandhi created a split in Congress and started grooming his son Sanjay Gandhi into politics, you all are aware that Sanjay had a extra ordinary power during emergency. But after Sanjay’s death she pushed her other son Rajiv Gandhi into politics who was reluctant to enter politics. But it was height of Congressmen hypocrisy when they made him PM after Indira’s death. And after Rajiv’s death his wife Sonia Gandhi was pushed into politics as his children were young at that time, and she might have become PM in 2004, but due to her foreign origin she had to step back. Now afterwards Sonia and Rajiv’s son Rahul Gandhi also entered politics and he was Congress Party’s contender for 2014 General Elections, but congress party lost miserably to BJP in that election.
  2. Samajwadi Party (SP)- This party was founded by Mulayam Singh Yadav. He first pushed his son Akhilesh Yadav as Lok Sabha member and when in 2012 SP won the UP assembly elections, Akhilesh was made CM. In 2014 General Elections to Lok Sabha SP won only 5 seats out of 80 seats, and all these seats belong to Mulayam Singh and his family members. In 2017 assembly elections Akhilesh pushed out his father as president of SP and took over the party but SP lost the elections to BJP.
  3. Rashtravadi Janata Dal(RJD)- This party was floated by Laloo Prasad Yadav. In the late 90s when Laloo was implicated in Fodder scam and he had to resign as CM of Bihar, then what he did was unparalleled in the history of Indian politics, he made his wife Rabri Devi  CM, who was an illiterate lady who could hardly sign her name in hindi language. He again came back as CM after few years.  When his party was part of UPA he became Railways Minister at Centre and again Rabri Devi was installed as CM. In 2014 he was convicted in fodder scam , therefore he could not contest any election. So in 2014 Bihar assembly election he made an alliance with Congress and  Janata Dal U(Nitish Kumar) . This alliance won the election and Laloo  got his one son the cabinet minister’s post and other son as Deputy CM. While one son is matric failed and other son has not passed his 12th Exam.
  4. Biju Janata Dal (BJD)- This party was formed by Biju Patnaik. His son Naveen Patnaik took over the reigns of the party after his death. In this case he became CM of Odisha  and his performance as CM is good.
  5. National Congress Party (NCP)- This party was floated by  Sharad Pawar , PC Sangama and Tariq Anwar. Presently it is solely under the control of  Sharad Pawar. In 2004 Sharad Pawar’s nephew Ajit Pawar was made minister in Maharashtra  and he is supposed to be involved in the big irrigation scam running into thousands of crores. Sharad Pawar also got his daughter as member of parliament (MP) by giving his seat to her to contest, and he himself got elected to Rajya Sabha.
  6. Shiv Sena(SS)-  Party founded by Bal Thackrey, he nurtured the party for almost 3 decades and saw to that in 1994, in alliance with BJP came to power in Maharashtra state. In mid 90s his nephew Raj Thackrey  started emerging as youth leader in the party, Shiv Sainiks and others started thinking that he will take over from Bal Thackrey in the years to come. But to every ones surprise Bal Thackrey inducted his son Udhav Thackrey into active politics and within few years Udhav was made Executive President of the party.  Raj left the party after few years and floated his own part Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). At the moment  Raj’s party is not doing well in  Mumbai and Maharashtra, and Shiv Sena is supporting BJP in state govt, and BJP is giving outside support to Shiv Sena in BMC.
  7. DMK- At the moment M  Karunanidhi is Party Chief, and after too much fight between his sons about who will succeed him as party chief. Few months back Karunanidhi announced his son MK Stalin as his successor.

So above are the few cases in Indian Politics where nepotism has happened, there are many regional and smaller parties where nepotism is prevalent in a big way. Only major political parties where nepotism is not seen are BJP and Communist parties. Whether nepotism has benefited any political party or not it is very difficult to say, but in certain cases it has helped the party founder to add enough money/ funds to their kitty. Some of the people who took over the party has taken the party to its lowest point like Rahul Gandhi of Congress, some of them are maintained the party status like Udhav Thackrey of Shiv Sena or like Navin Patnaik who has taken party to newer heights.

So in the end nepotism is going to stay in the politics.

What you say my friends.

Awaiting for your feed backs and comments.

We still live under the Raja-Rani syndrome and want an heir to the throne! As long as the voter lives under this feudal mentality, nothing’s going to change! Education is the only key to change!

It is going to take minimum one more generation to change the mind set. Congress govt over almost last six decades never made an attempt to educate the masses.

    Dear Anilji
You are absolutely right about the nepotism in number of Parties which is rampant. However with Honourable Modiji ‘S entry and the type of way, things are taking place, the majority of the parties must have given hopes to gain power. Even combined force of the parties also can’t come nearby. Hence, let them forget about the power, and would be better to remain as recognized party by Election Commission by winning few minimum seats, mandatory. It will certainly take few more years, to come out of nepotism, but the things are proceeding towards the goal is a big relief. New generation is slowly getting educated with the old political culture, hitherto were thinking of shortcuts by joining as the party volunteers, without bothering for education. That’s how the Gundagiri was on the height of political parties and few are on the way to jails. Good News is that, the things are taking 180 degrees turn, slowly. Anyway it’s nice to keep up your blogs, lively, which happens to educate foe so many who may be reading the blogs and comments of so many. All the best dear. God bless you all including your dear family.
