Reservations

Yesterday half of Mumbai city was brought to halt due to Maratha community of Maharashtra holding a rally in Mumbai city for demanding reservations in govt jobs , educational institutions etc etc. I do not know where this issue of reservations is going to lead our country. Our founding fathers of constitution recommended reservations for scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and other backward class people for few years and our politicians are fighting for reservations for their communities even after 70 years of independence. Instead of doing away with reservations more and more people are being added in the reservations list. And if there was no cap from SC  for reservations, our politicians by now would have blocked more than 80% jobs and educational seats in the name of reservations.

My few observations on this issue:

1. As per newspaper report Marathas constitute 32% of Maharashtra population and if you give reservations to the community which is 32% of state’s population, tomorrow some community with 40% population will also start demanding. Actually all  these agitations are purely for political reasons. Maharashtra state was formed in 1960 and I am staying in Mumbai (Maharashtra) since then and if my memory is correct in last 57 years there have been only 4 non Marathas CM( including present CM) and all other CMs have been from Maratha community. My question is why this demand of reservations was not made during the tenure of Maratha CMs. From 1999 t0 2014 there was Congress/NCP govt in Maharashtra  with Maratha CMs, then this demand of reservation was never made. Is it due to the reasons that all the Maratha leaders during that time were either involved in various scams or they were trying to defend their colleagues involved in various scams. So after losing power all these Maratha leaders fanned the passion of Maratha community toward reservations. After seeing the cars in which they drove down to Mumbai and the way more than 50% or the protesters were dressed, they all looked from upper class or upper middle class society, which do not need reservations
2. Similar thing happened in Gujarat few years back when Patel community started demanding reservations. Where is the self styled leader of Patel community Hardik Patel is now, that time he was fully backed by Congress party as they are also out of power in Gujarat for more than 20 years. Hardik was being projected as future CM of Gujarat.
3. Same thing happened in Haryana also when Jats started demanding reservations. The state which was formed so that Jats can have their own state, as they never wanted to be part of Punjab state. And the Jats are from major community in the state.
4. Above are the few examples I have illustrated, similar story is happening in all other states where even majority community is demanding reservations. Are the people from majority community are becoming envious of people from minority communities because the minorities are getting better opportunity in govt jobs and seats in educational institutions.
5. Here I want to site the examples of few minority communities in major states who have never demanded reservations for them in govt jobs etc. They are not very minor communities like  Parsis or even Catholics and they are Sikh/Hindu Punjabis and Sindhis. You will find these communities in every state of our country, and even in most of the countries in the world. They are the people who suffered most during partition of the country at the time of independence. Most of these people were pauper when they landed in this part of the country after partition and were given a refugee status and majority of them have achieved success. With the emergence of their 2nd/3rd generation all are well placed without any support of any form of reservations. You all will be surprised to know that if you count the officers in all armed forces, the number one community from where they have come in armed forces is Sikhs/Hindu Punjabis. I am very proud that I belong to Hindu Punjabi community and  what ever I have done and achieved in my life is due to my ability and not because of reservations in any form.

The reservations due to caste system has become the worst form of disease which has struck our country. Recently in Presidential elections both the candidates were from backward community. One was ex Minister and Speaker of Lok Sabha( who had even studied abroad) She was Meira Kumar, opposition candidate and other was RN Kovind who was lawyer, MLA, State minister and Governor of State. Both have come up through reservations but why call them backward class now, as they have come out of that class after their achievements. But fact is that their children and even grand children will keep on getting reservations in the years to come. This was not  the idea of founding fathers of constitution, if being born in particular caste or class is going to give benefits for next few generations also then the cause for which reservation was done in initial stages has lost its value and reservations will become only a political tool.
