Hi Friends, my apologies for missing my blog writing for last few days due to preoccupation in some personal matters.
My today’s topic is on the motor vehicles. You all must have have read about very heavy smog in northern part of the country specially in Delhi. Delhi and neighboring states are blaming each other for this mess, Delhi blaming Punjab & Haryana for burning left over dry grass after the crop is cut and they blaming Delhi for pollution from vehicles. The pollution from motor vehicles operating on Petrol/Diesel is problem all over the country. The pollution during winter months have been problem in the northern cities for last so many decades, because smoke does not dissipate in the atmosphere due to cold temperature, I remember even 3 decades back it was difficult to pass thru Connaught Place in Delhi due to heavy vehicular traffic and generally you ended up with heavy headache.
Briefly I would like to deliberate how our country is landed in this mess:
1. The first and foremost thing is that lopsided rules developed for motorised vehicles. It was known decades back that petrol/diesel vehicle’s emission is harmful for human, diesel one more harmful than petrol. But still govt went on giving licences to motor car manufacturers to manufacture diesel driven cars, people went on buying these cars as diesel is cheaper than petrol in our country.
2. Pollution under check (PUC) certificate is a big farce, as any one can get the certificate by paying money over the regular fees.
3. Allowing more than 2/3 decades old vehicles to run on the roads, specially diesel trucks and buses. The fitness certificate for the vehicle can be bought by bribing Road Transport officers.
4.Govt went on allowing more car manufacturers to produce and sell cars in the country, without developing infra structure in all the towns and cities. Let us consider the case of Mumbai, where the car density has grown so much that there is no scope to add more vehicles on the city roads, but still few hundred cars are being added daily. With metro works going on full swing on the major roads of the city, the driving of vehicle is really a pain. Less space in the city with increasing vehicular density is adding to the already pollution index. In the National Capital Region (NCR)-it has been reported that there are almost 1 crore registered motorised vehicles and figure of Mumbai Metropolitan region is little less of NCR.
5.Agreed that with the increasing income and easy financing buying the vehicle has become easier. Before allowing the banks to give loans with lower interest rates for buying vehicles, did the govt ever thought on its repercussion on the already overloaded infra structure of the cities, where these vehicles are going to run. But govt was only interested in collecting taxes from manufacturers and Road Tax and other levies from customers, without improving city’s infra. If city can not take load of more vehicles than more car should not be registered in the particular city alternatively if you want to buy a car in that case surrender the registration of one old car.
6.Recently I saw on WhatsApp, that in the Capital City of China, Beijing, they have installed multiple big tower system called the smog vacuum cleaner with the capacity ranging of 30,000 cubic meter per hour and they say Beijing is most polluted city in the world. If Chinese can do it why not India, only difference is that Chinese Administrators and Politicians care for their Cities and citizens health, but here Politicians fight among themselves and care two hoots for the citizens. In the Smog Vacuum cleaner the separate out Carbon and other impurities present in the air, and the surprising element is after compressing carbon, they produce diamond like substance and make rings out of them which can be sold in fashion jewellery market. You can watch this video on you tube- the link is https://youtu.be/qpVKYyUZjJY. The person responsible for creating this system is Dann Roosegarde. This type of system is worth experimenting with Delhi’s smog.
There is one more bigger problem associated with Vehicles and that is PARKING, which I will deliberate in my future blogs.
Awaiting for your feed backs and comments.

Public transport is the key to less pollution where people use trains, buses and metros to travel. New York built its subway system in 1915, Once we have these good travel systems in place, and people travel in them as they do in New York, pollution will come down.
It’s happening in India. I can see a huge effort in Bombay and hats off to those who are making it happen!

I agree that ever increasing number of vehicles on the roads of our cities is a problem which needs to be tackled quickly & seriously.

The smog vaccum cleaner is a good option among others which can be considered…..
