The Hatke topic  for the last weekend of March 2018. Sometime in last year before I started writing my blog, I had spent considerable time in researching on the subject of choosing top 100 films of Bollywood( Hindi ) films, the list which I finalised after giving them score in the field of Direction,Acting by main cast, Story, Screenplay/Dialogue, Production Value, Music and Technical Value. Out of that list, I am listing out the films which were released  in the decade of 50s(1950-59), with small write up :

  1. Awara(1951)- Produced & Directed by Raj Kapoor, Main Actors- Prithiraj Kapoor, Nargis & Raj Kapoor, Music by Shankar Jaikishan.     A judge wife is kidnapped by Dacoit, and when she returns, is not accepted by society& judge, so is thrown out. She gives birth to judge’s son, but the same dacoit lures the son in his world of crime. How he is reformed is rest of the story. Wonder music & acting by ensemble cast.
  2. Do Bigha Zameen(1953)- P&D by Bimal Roy, Music by Salil Choudhary, Main cast- Balraj Sahni & Nirupa Roy. A farmer comes to city to earn money so that he can free his mortgaged  land . he starts pulling hand rickshaw. When he returns, he see his land is not there and some factory is being build there. Good acting by Balraj Sahni
  3. Shri 420 (1955- P & D by Raj Kapoor, Music by Shankar Jaikishan, Main Cast Raj Kapoor & Nargis. A story of simple man from small city, who gets involved in hanky panky business of corrupted rich people. Good acting by main cast and  wonderful songs which are still popular.
  4. Jaagte Raho(1956)—A film produced by Raj Kapoor and made in Hindi & Bengali. A story about a villager, who on feeling thirsty, enters a building in Bombay, and he watched quietly whatever is happening inside the building and expresses his feelings loudly on happenings . Wonderful acting by Raj Kapoor, and music by Salil Choudhary, although commercially it was not very successful, but it did very well in International festival circuits.
  5.  Devdas(1956)- P & D by Bimal Roy, music by SD Burman, main cast- Dilip Kumar, Suchitra Sen & Vyjayantimala. Based on Bengali novel by Sharatchandra Chatterjee. Devdas family didnot approve his match with Para, because she is not from upper cast. Devdas takes the help of liquor to forget pParo and lands up in kotha where Chandramukhi dances  Wonderful acting by main cast.
  6. Pyasa(1957) P&D by Guru Dutt, music by SD Burman, main cast-Guru Dutt, mala sinha, Waheeda Rehman and Rehman. A story of a poet who is not appreciated but ridiculed, but after his supposedly death, every one wants to cash on his poetry. He surfaces again and exposes every one and then denounce every one except a natch girl who loves him. Wonderful lyrics by Sahir Ludhianavi & music by SD Burman. Guru Dutt as poet was excellent.
  7. Mother India(1957)-P&D by Mehboob Khan, music by Naushad, main cast-Nargis, Sunil Dutta, Rajendra Kumar & Raaj Kumar. A  mother’s struggle to raise her 2 sons, when crippled husband leaves her, one of the sons became decoit whom she shots in the end to protect the honour of village girl. Life best role of Nargis.
  8. Naya Daur(1957)-P& D by BRChopra, music by OP Nayyar, main cast- Dilip Kumar, Vyjayantimala, Ajit & Jeevan. Story is set in village after independence, is about men v/s machine, between Tonga Drivers and plier of bus to a pilgrimage place near the village. Good acting by ensemble cast, but it was music by OP Nayyar which lifted the film, the songs are even popular today.
  9. Do Aankhen Barah Haath(1958)- P&D by V Shantaram, music by Vasant Desai, main cast-V Shantaram , Sandhya. A story of Jailer and six convicts and how they are reformed by jailer.
  10. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi(1958)- D by Satyen Bose, music by SD Burman, main cast-Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Anup Kumar & Madhubala.A story of 3 brothers(played by real life Kumar brothers), the eldest one is anti girls and other two are after girls. One of the most hillarious comedy ever to grace hindi cinema. Fantastic songs.
  11. Kaagaz Ke Phool(1959)-P & D by Guru Dutt, music by SD Burman, main cast- Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman & Veena. A story of pre independence hindi film director who is shunned by his family as at that time working in a film was not a good profession, falls in love with his heroine, which leads to self destruction.wonderful acting by both Guru Dutt as director and Waheeda Rehman as his heroine.
  12. Phir Subah Hogi(1958)- P & D by Ramesh Sehgal, music by Khayyam, main cast Raj Kapoor, Mala sinha & Rehman.A film based on Tolstoy’s short story crime & Punishment.  In the film hero accidently commits murder and how is life changes afterwards. nice acting by Raj Kapoor. wonderful lyrics by Sahir & music by Khayyam.
  13. Sujata(1959)-P&D by Bimal Roy, music by SD Burman, main cast -Sunil Dutt, Nutan & Shashikala. A story of  untouchable girl who is raised by upper caste family, how in the end the family say you are our daughter. Splendidly acted by Nutan in the lead role of Sujata. Good songs.
  14. Dhool Ka Phool(1959)- P by BR Chopra & D by Yash Chopra,  main cast Rajendra Kumar, Mala Sinha, Nanda & Ashok Kumar. The film is about the child born out of marriage and abandoned by unwed mother,and raised by a samaritan of different religion. In the end both biological father married to other lady and biological mother married to other man wants to adopt the baby. Wonderful acting by ensemble cast.

So how do you like this list of movies of 50s. Friends who are senior citizens must have seen these movies in their young days, and the young friends who may not have seen this movies, I can only advice you that if you have not seen these movies, please do watch them, you may find them bit slow but  they are still better than most of the movies released now a days, and especially music wise their songs are still enjoyable.

    I remember watching these films in theatres & immensely enjoying them.
    It is true that present day films are rarely of the calibre of films in days gone by.
