I am continuing with Hatke topic, which I started on the last weekend and that is 101 top Hindi films,and today I will brief you all with the movies from the list of 101 films, which were released in 1960s(1960-69)
- Chaudhavin Ka Chand (1960)- Produced (P) by Guru Dutt, Directed (D) by M Sadiq. After the debacle of Kaagaz Ke Phool in 1959, Guru Dutt officially never directed any film. Story of 3 friends, Rehman sees a girl(Waheeda Rehman) likes her but unknowingly Rehman ask his friend Guru Dutt to marry Waheeda. 3rd friend is Johny Walker a son of Police officer who loves a nautch girl. Excellent Music by Ravi.
- Mughal-e -Azam(1960)- P & D by K Asif. A fictitious story during the times of king Akbar ( Prithiraj Kapoor), a love story of Prince Salim( who later became Jehangir in Mughal history) and servant girl Anarkali(Madhubala). This was India’s first movie made on grand scale, with lavish sets of mughal era, excellent music by Naushad and acting by ensemble cast.
- Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai(1961)-P by Raj Kapoor & D by Radhu Karmarkar. A story of village simpleton (Raj Kapoor) who reforms a gang of dacoits. Other who acted in film were Padmini, Pran, Chanchal etc. Wonderful music by Shankar Jaikishan.
- Ganga Jamuna(1961)-P by Dilip Kumar & D by Nitin Bose. A story of 2 brothers living in village, due to certain circumstances elder brother (Dilip Kumar) becomes dacoit, while younger brother is a Police officer. Vyjayanthimala plays the role of elder brother’s love interest and wife. Good music by Naushad.
- Dharamputra (1961)-P by BR Chopra & D by Yash Chopra. A story about Muslim born boy played by Shashi Kapoor is brought up as Hindu boy by adopted parents. Actually he is illegitmate child of Muslim lovers Mala Sinha & Rehman. Good acting by ensemble cast and music by N Dutta.
- Kanoon(1961)- P & D by BR Chopra. A Courtroom suspense drama. Session judge (Ashok Kumar) is implicated in a murder where Public Prosecutor Rajendra Kumar is eyewitness. Nanda plays the role of Judge’s daughter and Rajendra Kumar’s love interest. This was one of the rare movie which did not have songs.Good background music by Salil Choudhary. Good acting by entire cast.
- Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962)-P by Guru Dutt & D by Abrar Alvi. Rehan is a Landlord (Sahib), Meena Kumari is Rehman’s wife(Bibi) and Guru Dutt works for them (Ghulam) and Waheeda Rehman plays Guru Dutt’s love interest.. Based on a Bengali novel by Bimal Mitra, story is set in early 20th century. Good music by Hemant Kumar. Meena Kumari lived the role of drunkun wife.
- Gumrah (1963)-P & D by BR Chopra. Mala Sinha is forced to marry Ashok Kumar, her dead sister’s husband, although she loves Sunil Dutt. The story is about Mala’s continued love affair with Sunil Dutt even after marriage. Excellent lyrics by Sahir and music by Ravi and Mahendra Kapoor wonderfully sang all the male songs.
- Sangam(1964)- P & D by Raj Kapoor. A love triangle story, main roles played by Raj Kapoor, Vyjayanthimala & Rajendra Kumar. This was first major Hindi film, which was extensively shot on the locations in Europe, which set the trend for shooting in foreign locations. Wonderful music by Shankar Jaikishan.
- Guide(1966)-P by Dev Anand & D by Vijay Anand. Based on the novel written by RK Narayan. Story is about Waheeda Rehman, who loves dancing is married to Kishore Sahu, meets Dev Anand, a tourist guide and how their life changes. Wonderful music by ensemble cast and music by SD Burman.
- Teesri Manzil(1966)- P by Nasir Hussain & D by Vijay Anand. A musical suspense thriller. Shammi Kapoor is a suspect in the murder of Asha Parekh’s elder sister. Asha wants to take a revenge with Shammi Kappor. Excellent music by RD Burman, this was the movie which brought RD into lime light and he became one of the top music director after that.
- Upkaar (1967) P & D by Manoj Kumar, Based on Jai jawan Jai Kisaan theme. Manoj Kumar becomes soldier after farming land dispute with younger brother Prem Chopra. Asha Parekh plays a doctor who falls in love with Manoj. Pran breaks his negative image and plays a good character of lame Malang Baba. excellent music by Kalyanji Anandji and song ‘ Mere Desh Ki Dharti’ has become one of the best patriotic song.
- Jewel Thief(1967)- P by Dev Anand & D by Vijay Anand. A musical thriller.The highlight of the story was that the viewer is forced to believe that there exist one character, when actually it is not there. Ensemble cast of Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand, Vyjaynthimala, Helen, Tanuja & others all acted wonderfully. Chart bursting music by SD Burman.

Bandini(1963)- a film by Bimal Roy; Haqeeqat(1964)- a Indo China war film by Chetan Anand ; Teesri Kasam(1966)-a film by Basu Bhattacharya produced by Shailendra with wonderful music by Shankar Jaikishan; Aashirwad(1969)- a film by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, wonderful acting in lead role by Ashok Kumar; Aradhana -a film by Shakti Samanta had a excellent acting by Sharmila Tagore , Rajesh Khanna & music by SD Burman; Ittefaq(1969)- a suspense film by Yash Chopra, excellent acting by Rajesh Khanna & Nanda, this film also had no songs; Do Raaste(1969)-a family Drama by Raj Khosla.
Friends I hope you must have enjoyed going through the list, and for some of you it must have revived your young days memories. For my young friends, if you have not watched these movies, please do watch them now, I promise you will love these movies.
