Continuing with Weekend Hatke topic of decade wise top Hindi films. This week I will be briefing you all on films released During 1980s :
- Aakrosh- Directed (D) by Govind Nihalani. The story is about a low caste man played by Om Puri who is accused of killing upper caste man. Nasseruddin Shah, plays a lawyer who defends him in a court. Later it is revealed that he kills the upper caste man because that person raped his wife. When his mother expires he is released from prison for last rites, there he sees that the same upper caste person eyeing his younger sister, thinking that his sister will also become tools in the hand of upper caste man, he kills his younger sister and shouts at top of his voice, meaning he has expressed his Aakrosh. Fine acting by Naseeruddin and Om Puri.
- Karz (1980)- P & D by Subhash Ghai- story of reincarnation. Rishi Kapoor is famous singer, when he visits a hill station he suddenly starts recollecting his life in previous birth, where he was killed by his wife , played by Simi, who was a puppet in the hands of a don played by Premnath. Story is about how he takes revenge. Wonderful acting by Rishi Kapoor, Super hit music by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
- Kalyug(1981)-D by Shyam Benegal. Loosely based on Mahabharat. Story of two feuding business families. Shashi Kapoor plays the character representing Karna, Victor Bannerjee- Duryodhan, Anant Nag-Arjun, Raj Babbar- Yudhisthir, AK Hangal- Bhishma. Superb acting by ensemble cast.
- Shakti (1982)-D by Ramesh Sippy. A upright Police Officer’s (Dilip Kumar) son is kidnapped, while in kidnapper’s custody he hears his father ” saying to kidnapper , he will not bow to kidnapper’s demand even if his son’s life is in danger”. After this incident the son develops hatred towards his father, and when he grows up (Amitabh Bachchan) he does job for the same don who had kidnapped him, to antagonise his father. The rest of the story is about their wayward relationship and under current love. Wonderful acting by Dilip Kumar and ably supported by Amitabh Bachchan.
- Nikah(1982)- P & D by BR Chopra. A muslim social drama. Raj Babbar silently loves Salma Agha, who is in love with Deepak Parashar, and they get married. After some time there is crack in marriage as Deepak can not devote more time to his wife, and one day in a fit of anger he says triple talaq. Salma is shattered, unknowings he gets a job in a office where Raj Babbar is also working. Again there friendship develops and Raj Babbar proposes her, and she eventually agrees for marriage. Now Deepak is also repenting and he wants Salma back. What happens next is to be seen. Fine acting by ensemble cast. Good music by Ravi.
- Sadma(1983)- D by Balu Mahendra. A story of girl (Sridevi) who loses her memory and goes back to childhood. Kamal Hassan rescues her from brothel and treats her at his home. But when the girl gets her memory back she can not recognise Kamal Hassan, and goes back to her house with parents. Last scene at the railway station is master piece and has to be experienced, Wonderful acting by Kamal Hassan and ably supported by Sridevi.
- Arth(1983)-D by Mahesh Bhatt. A film director played by Kulbhushan Kharbandha leaves his wife, played by Shabana Azmi. He has fallen in love with a film actress Smita Patil, who is slightly mentally imbalanced. In the end he wants to come back to his wife but wife refuses to take him back. Wonderful acting by Shabana Azmi & Smita Patil.
- Saraansh (1984)- D by Mahesh Bhatt. A story of old couple , played by Anupam Kher and Rohini Hattangadi, who loses their only son in USA. To make some extra money they give one room to a girl as PG. The girl is involved with politician’s son, who is against their marriage.Rest is to be seen. Wonderful acting by main cast.
- Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)- fondly known as QSQT. D by Mansoor Khan. This movie brought the audience to theatres because of novel treatment to cute young love story. Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla play young lover but they belong to two feuding families. Wonderful music by Anand Milind and the song “Papa Kehte Hain Bada Naam Karega” became a cult song, and superb acting by both Aamir and Juhi.
- Maine Pyar Kiya- D by Sooraj Barjatya. Again a young romantic pair and their love story, but this film is also depicts the family values. The young pair played by Salman Khan and Bhagyashri took nation by storm. Fantastic music by Raam Laxman and all the song s were chart busters. Fine acting by ensemble cast.
Other honourable mentions were: Insaaf Ka Taraazu(1980), Qurbani (1980), Ek Duje Ke Liye (1981), Love Story (1981), Umrao Jaan (1981), Angoor (1982), Katha (1983), Sparash (1984), Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1985), Pushpak (1987), Mr India (1987), Tezaab (1988) and Parinda (1989).
