Continuing with my last installments of top 100 Hindi films. Today I will be covering the films released from 2000 to 2016. My choice of the films which can be considered among top 100 films are as follows:
- Tanu Weds Manu (2012)– Directed(D) by Anand L Rai. Tanu( Kangana Ranaut) is a fun loving girl who has no clear idea about what type of boy he wants for marriage, she falls in love with Raja( Jimmy Shergill) woi is local Dada type person. Her family want her to get married to London based Doctor Manu( R Madhavan). How in the end Tanu realises her follies and agrees to get married to Manu. Wonderful acting by Kangana Ranaut.
- Vicky Donor (2012)– D by Shoojit Sarkar. Vicky (Ayushman Khurana) a Punjabi youth who does not have any steady income, becomes a sperm donor and makes money. He falls in love with a Bengali Divorcee ( Yami Gautam). She finds after the marriage that she can not conceive, and how Dr Chadaa( Anu Kapoor), Vicky’s mentor, brings back the joy in their family is rest of the story. Nice acting by ensemble cast. Very Novel idea, and cine goers were really taken by surprise.
- OMG-Oh My God– D by Umesh Shukla. Kanjibhai( Paresh Rawal) does not believe in God. His shop is destroyed in Earth Quake, and Insurance company refuses to pay him as the policy does not cover act of God. Kanjibhai then files case against God , and also sends notices to all Gurus etc who controls temples and other holy places etc, asking them to pay the damages. How he wins in the end is the interesting story. Wonderful acting by Paresh rawal.
- Kahani (2012)– D by Sujoy Ghosh. A pregnant Vidya Bagchi ( Vidya Balan) lands in Kolkata to search for her missing husband, who has come on deputation from London for some secret govt project. She ask for help from Kolkata police in searching him, and finds that there is no such person exists in the company’s record. How the mystery unfolds is to be seen. Fine acting by Vidya Balan, and Nawazuddin Siddiqi in his first major role.
- Haider (2014)– D by Vaishal Bhardwaj. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. Haider ( Shahid K returns home during apoor), a Kashmiri student returns home, when his father disappears. How he learns about his mother affair with his uncle, and dirty politics played against him. How this tragic story unfolds is best to be seen. Wonderful acting By Shahid Kapoor and Tabu, who played his mother.
- PK ( 2014)– D by Raju Hirani. An alien played by Aamir Khan lands on earth and how his remote (by which he can call his space ship) is stolen. He learns, while searching for remote, that some self proclaimed God men is trying to pass that remote as part of God Shiva’s musical instrument. As he always talks in a manner as if he is a drunk man, people starts calling Pee Kay(PK). How PK exposes the self styled God men is the balance part of story. Fine and novel story concept , and nice acting by ensemble cast led by Aamir Khan.
- Dum Laga Ke Haisha(2015)- D by Sharat Kataria. Prem Prakash Tiwari (Ayushman Khurana) is forced by family to marry an over weight girl Sandhya ( Bhumi Pednekar), who is trying foe teachers job in Govt school. Prem hates Sandhya as he is over weigh and does not consummate the marriage. Their differences grows and they land in court for divorce. How they reconcile is the rest of the story. Wonderful acting by lead players Ayushman Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar.
- Tame Weds Manu Returns (2015)– D by Anand L Rai. A sequel to the earlier film. After marriage Tanu & Manu stays in London, but tanu can not adjust in that life and ask for divorce and returns to his family in India. Manu also comes to India and accidently meets Datto ( Kangana Ranaut in double role), who resembles Tanu. He starts following her and wants to get married to her. Now Tanu comes to know about this plan, and how Tanu and Manu reconcile in the end is rest of the story. Fantastic acting by Kangana Ranaut, specially in the role of Datto.
- Neerja (2016)– D by Ram Madhwani. A biopic on the life Neerja Bhanot, an Air Hostess with Pan american Airways, who save life of most of the passengers when the flight was over taken by Hijackers on Pakistani soil. Sonam Kapoor played the role Neerja, and she literally lived the role. Shabana Azmi as her mother was also superb.
- Dangal(2016)-D by Nitesh Tiwari. Another biopic film on the lives of Mahavirprasad Phogat , who trained his daughters to become wrestler. The film traces the story of his 2 elder daughters Geeta( Played by Fatima Shaikh) and Babita( Saniya Malhotra). How Geeta becomes first Indian Girl to win Gold medal in world event,( Commonwealth Games at New Delhi 2010) is the story, and in the same Games Babita wins the Silver medal. Aamir Khan as Mahavir Prasad, acted so well, that it has to be seen on silver screen. All the other members of ensemble cast lived their roles.
I have covered films till 2016. when I made top 100 Hindi film list. You will notice that music and songs were not even one of the factor for film to become successful, which is very disturbing factor.
