Bollywood Promotions

Today I am not writing on politics or sports,  but on Bollywood(Hindi Films). For last few months I have found that Bollywood producers are over doing the promotions of their films before the release.. Recent examples is film called Rabata, it released on last Friday, but almost 2 weeks there were articles in Bombay Times daily. It is well known fact that Bombay Times is a supplement of Times of India, where every news item is being paid for. Also the star of this movies appeared on shows like Kapil Sharma show and other reality shows. In the end what happened the movie tanked at the box  office. And it is happening for all the films

My observations on this:

  1. Producers should realised that  over promotion of any film is harmful, as the paid media exaggerate the film so much that people have very high expectations from the film, and in case if  film is found to below their built up expectations the film flops.
  2. In the recent times so many films from known banners have flopped just because of over promotions. Classical examples are  Yashraj banner’s Befikre, Sajid Kham’s Humshakal andHimmatwala, Rakesh Mehra’s Mirziyan, Aushutosh Gowarikar’s Mohenzodaro, Vishai Bhardwaj’s Rangoon and many more.
  3. There are many films which had become successful without much promotions in recent past. Films like Dangal, Airlift, Rustom, Nil Batte Sannata, Hindi Medium, Special 26, Neerja, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Vicky Donor had minimum of publicity before release, but all of them succeeded as the films had a good content and  with word of mouth publicity people went to cinema halls to see them.
  4. Only exception is films of Salmaan Khan. His films are promoted in a big way before release and generally they succeed, because of his star power and his fan following. Even Shah Rukh Khan’s film are promoted in big way before release but few of his last films like Dilwale, Fan and Raees are fared on box office collection below expectations.
  5. I feel only reason film makers are doing big promotions before release is because they know, now a days box office collections depends upon how the film fares  during opening week end. So they feel by promoting in big way they can attract the people during first few days.
  6. Film makers, please realise that your big promotions can attract the audience on opening day, but if the film is found to be below expectations, then film is going to be flop with mouth publicity. So please do not kill your product by over hyping.

So some agency has to find till what extent the film is to be promoted. In the end with heavy promotions, some section of media is making good money. I do not say there should not be promotions and publicity, there has to be some balance.

What you say, my friends.

First of all the name Bollywood itself is a name copied from Hollywood has my first objection. It is pity that Hindi film industry could not find its own name with their intellectual resources itself leads to a bad taste. Or is it a normal way to produce the films, which brought the idea in normal circumstances as an ideal gift to copy the name with a view to achieve fast fame without much botheration? Anyway, I feel, it’s high time to change the copied name with an independent thinking ability to demonstrate the Indian brain which has identified itself in the World History in different directions, with its absolute intellectual parameters,, yet remaining humble, itself is leading to praise has been the experience which should not be forgotten.
Personally I like, light films of olden type with full of comedy rather than serious films with dramatic fighting scenes. Airlift and few other films of Akshay Khanna and Raval (now an MP). Being an old man I had a different taste of films during my young age, more towards comedy films.

I agree Bollywood is copied from Bollywood, but it has been continuing for decades. Yes, olden days movies had some meaning.
