I think it has become habit of BCCI to wash their dirty linen in public, there are no other words to describe how the Cricket Board has handled the issue of Anil Kumble, till yesterday the coach of Indian Cricket Team (seniors). It was known to every one that Kumble’s contract was till the end of Champions Trophy.
See the following points in chronological order :
- Last year Anil Kumble was appointed coach of Indian team after selection process initiated by BCCI.
- Concurrence of his name was taken from then test team captain Virat Kohli and one day/T20 captain MS Dhoni.
- Initially he was given contract for one year with the understanding that it might be renewed.
- In the middle of cricketing season Dhoni informed the Cricket Board that he wants to step down as captain of one day and T20 team. So Virat Kohli was made team’s captain for all formats of game.
- During Kumble’s tenure performance of Indian team : India won 2 test series with West Indies 2-0, and drew T20 series 1-1 (away series). India beat New Zealand 3-0 in test matches and 3-2 in ODI (home series).India beat England 5-0 in test matches, and 2-1 in ODI(home series). India beat Bangladesh 1-0 in one test series. They beat Australia 2-1 in test matches(home series) and lastly reached Champions Trophy final, where they lost to arch rival Pakistan.
- So performance wise Kumble was proven to be good coach, then what was the problem.
- The problem is ego of the star players, in this case Indian Captain Virat Kohli, who thought Kumble is not working as per his plans.
- It has always been a problem with BCCI, as they have always given more importance to star players. Before Virat nothing was moving in BCCI without Dhoni’s consent. It was well known fact that Dhoni used to back some of his nominees in the Indian team, even when selection committee members were not approving the selection, Dhoni with the help of N Srinivasan used to have his way. Earlier even at the time of Sachin’s retirement, no body from BCCI had the guts to ask Sachin about his retirement plans, Sachin used to select which series he wants to play, and which he does not. In the end Sachin chose to play his last test in home ground Mumbai. Before was the similar case with Kapil Dev, who in pursuit of world record must have delayed his retirement by at least 20 tests, which resulted in Venketeshwar Prasad cooling his heels as reserve in dressing room.
- I understand fans treating star players as demi god, but the BCCI giving them so much importance that these players think they have become supermen and they do not need any coaching and can not take criticism of coach even, whose job is to analyse your performance after every match.
- BCCI, if you treat player of caliber like Kumble so shabbily, that he refuses to go to West Indies with the team even after BCCI requesting him to do so, then there is something really wrong, there are rumors that Virat refused to take Kumble as main coach to WI.If this is the treatment meted to Kumble, then no respected past player will like to apply for coach job with Indian Cricket Team.
So what you say my friends.
Awaiting your feed backs/comments.

All our so called stars have big, fragile ego! I remember Ganguly and Chappel, they nearly came to blows. Players like Kumble and a Dravid were humble and good people and not like these asses!
