Gorakhpur Tragedy

Recently there have been hue and cry in the print and TV media regarding death of more than  60 children in some hospital in Gorakhpur due to non availability of Oxygen cylinders. The primary report suggested that due to non payment of his bills for more than 3 months the supplier of the oxygen cylinders with held the supply to hospital. Every one in the media started shouting that how come hospital attached to medical college can do this to  their patient by not releasing the payment for oxygen supply. Even their was news that funds were demanded but grant from the authorities was not received. But slowly the correct news started leaking in the social media and other channels, which were not controlled by the pseudo secular people.

Some of the facts related to this issue are given below:

1. The deaths occurred due to disease called Encephalatis, this is spread by both virus and bacteria. This is type of meningitis which attacks the brain. This disease is happening in last few years among the children of that area including neighbouring border state of Nepal.
2. People generally bring their children to hospital in very advanced stage of illness. Even last year in August also about 500- 6oo children died  , and this is happening for last couple of years during monsoon  season.
3. No body knows how the media linked these deaths to the lack of oxygen supply in the hospital.
4. There is no doubt that there was disruption in oxygen supply due to non release of payment, but to make this as cause for death was most unwarranted.
5. But some one  has to answer from the previous govts that when the vaccine for this illness is available, why this was not purchased by the hospital or they were then least bothered about deaths. Secondly if the vaccine was purchased then where it got vanished or it was siphoned off by some corrupt doctors attached to this hospital.
6. There is news in social media that Dr Kafeel Khan, the Chief of the hospital , who is also in charge of hospital research centre, is also running his private Nursing Home, is rumoured to have diverted the oxygen supply to his nursing home, and hence their was shortage in the hospital. He is also member of the purchasing committee of the hospital. Now he is put under suspension.
7. Some people say these type of deaths are occurring in Gorkhpur and near by areas since 1980, but Gorakhpur Health authorities or officers in previous govt never bothered to take notice of this epidemic.
8. The 5 members magisterial inquiry probing into these deaths has reported that there was  break down in the supply of oxygen but it did not cause any death. Based on these reports the state govt has set up a committee headed by the chief secretary for a probe.
9. There is one more news item in today’s paper that mortality rate of children in Gorakhpur is among worst in the world, but still state govt is not bothered.
10. And our media without finding the facts start publicising the news and some news channel must have had a elaborate discussions on this issue. People say this was done basically to malign the BJP govt in UP. But they should also understand that truth will eventually comes out, so they should stop fooling the public by spreading false propaganda.
