Number 4

We Indians have a very special attachment to NUMBER 4. Given below are a few sayings/proverbs in the Hindi language with the significance of the number 4, and there are many similar sayings in other Indian languages also.

  1. 4 Din Ki Chandani Aur Phir Andheri Raat– the literal translation of this saying is ‘ Moonlight is there for 4 days, rest of the time there is dark night’. This saying means that ‘happy moments are few in life as compared to sad/unhappy moments’.
  2. 4 Kitaben Kya Padh Li, Khud Ko Governor Samajhta Hai– literal translation is ‘ After reading 4 books, he thinks he has become a governor’. The saying means ‘ After getting little education, he thinks of himself as a very important person or person with little knowledge thinks himself a VIP’.
  3. 4 Paise Kamaoge Tab Pata Chalega– the literal translation is ‘ after earning 4 paise, then you will know’. The saying actually means that ‘a person realizes the value of money after he starts earning it’.
  4. 4 Paise Mein Bikti Hai Aaj Ke Daur Mein Imaandari– literal translation is ‘in 4 paise, honesty is being sold in today’s world. The saying actually means ‘ there is no value for honesty in modern times’.
  5. Aakhir Hamari Bhi 4 Logon Mein Izzat Hai– literal translation is ‘ After all we have prestige among 4 people. The saying actually means ‘ We also have our own prestige among our known circle’.
  6. Yeh Baat 4 Log Sunege To Kya Sochenge– literal translation is ‘ What will 4 people think after hearing this’. The saying actually means that ‘ What will people in our known circle react after hearing this news, and this might reduce our prestige in the society’.
  7. 4 Dinon Ki Aayi Hui Bahu Ke Aise Tevar– literal translation is ‘ 4 day old daughter-in-law is having such an attitude’. The saying actually means that ‘ a newly entrant to family or company is showing such an attitude, what he/she thinks about himself/herself’.
  8. 4 Din To Dukan Mein Tik Kar Baith Jao– literal translation is ‘ just sit in shop for 4 days continuously’. The saying actually means that ‘ if you want to learn a new business/job, you will have to devote your time in that task continuously’.
  9. Who Aayi Aur 4 Baate Sunakar Chali Gayi– literal translation is ‘ she came and made you listen 4 things’. The saying actually means that ‘ someone comes and scolds you without giving you time to react.
  10. Tumse Kya 4 Kadam Bhi Nahin Chala Jata– literal translation is ‘ why can’t you walk for 4 steps’. The saying actually means that ‘ this task is so simple why can’t you do it yourself’.
  11. Aankhen 4 Ho Gaye– literal translation is ‘ eyes became 4’. The saying actually means ‘ when two people of opposite sex start staring at each other and romantic feeling develops’.
  12. 4 Chand Laga Diye– literal translation is ‘ you have put 4 moons. The saying actually means ‘ our prestige has gone up by this action/work of yours.

And Lastly

  1. Aakhir Jaana To 4 Kandhon Pe Hi Hai– literal translation is ‘ in the end you will go on 4 shoulders. It actually means ‘ after you die four person will carry your death bed (Arthi) to the cremation site on their shoulders’.
