Tuesday Post

In continuation of my yesterday’s post of political parties which are controlled by one family. Brief details of  remaining political parties:

  1. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)- It is now headed by Sharad Pawar, the party was founded by Sharad Pawar, PA Sangma & Tariq Anwar in late 90s. That time they all were part of  Congress , when Sonia Gandhi took over rein of Congress party and was being projected as Congress’s PM candidate for next election, these three leaders along with their followers left the Congress on the issue of Italian origin of Sonia Gandhi and founded NCP. Sangma and  Anwar developed differences with Pawar when he agreed to back UPA after 2004 general Elections. After this NCP was known as Pawar’s party and he became part of UPA, NCP along with Congress also formed the govt in Maharashtra 2004 and 2009. That time Pawar was basically in national politics and his nephew Ajit Pawar was handling Maharashtra state and was Dy CM in last govt.Towards the end of last decade Pawar started promoting his daughter Supriya Sule, afterwards in 2009 he vacated his LS seat of Baramati , from where Supriya fought the elections, she is twice MP from Baramati. So it was totally became a family affair and slowly Ajit is being sidelined.
  2. Biju Janata Dal(BJD)- founded by  Biju Patnaik who was CM of Orissa. After is death his son Navin Patnaik took over the party and became CM, and he is presently 3rd straight time CM of the state. He is not married and there is no news of  his other family members. After him what will happen to BJD is not sure, as he leads both -party and state.
  3. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)- This party was founded by CN Annadurai in in 1950s, that time it was cadre based party. Annadurai became first non congress CM of  Madras State(Now Tamilnadu). After his death MK Karunanidhi took over the rein of the party. Popular tamil film star of that era MG Ramchandran (MGR) was also member of DMK, after  the differences between MGR and Karunanidhi grew, MGR left the party along with his followers and founded  new political party Anna DMK. After that DMK became Karunanidhi’s family party. He is 5 times CM of Tamilnadu, presently he is not keeping good health as he is + 90 years of age, one of his MK Stalin is Executive President of the Party, who is also in Tamilnadu politics. Karunanidhi’s daughter and nephew are Loksabha MPs .
  4. National Conference(NC)- founded by Shiekh Abdullah. Its presence is basically in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). Sheikh abdullah who had a close relations with Nehru was fostered on J&K by Nehru to become head of the state. After Nehru’s death he fell out with Congress and few years Congress party ruled the state. After Sheikh’s death his son Farookh Abdullah took the charge of the party and initially in his leadership party prospered  and he became CM of the state few times. During his regime as CM militancy in Kashmir grew and J&K has become a troubled state for last 3 decades. In between Farookh Abdullah left state politics and became member of parliament  and was also a Union  Minister. During his absence from state his son Omar Abdullah took over the rein. Omar also  became CM of the state in 2010. presently both father and son are in wilderness and are becoming famous for giving irresponsible statements on Kashmir issue.
  5. Peoples Democratic Party(PDP)- founded by  Mufti Mohd Syed. The party’s presence is only limited to state of J&K. Mufti was twice CM of  J&K.  He was also the Union Home Minister in  VP Singh’s govt at centre. You will recall that when he was Home minister his daughter was kidnapped by Kashmiri militants and to secure her release govt had to release few militants who were longing in Indian Jails. This move was widely criticised., He died in 2016 as CM of J&K, where his party has formed the govt  with BJP . After his death, his daughter Mehbooba Mufti, who was already in politics and was Loksabha MP became CM and head of the party.
  6. Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP)- a party founded by Kashiram for the up liftment of Dalit community. Mayawati was one of the senior member of the party, for whom Kashiram was like a father figure. After Kashiram’s death Mayawati along with her supporters took over the reins of the party and now it is totally controlled by Mayawati.  She is a spinster but it is rumoured that her brothers are getting involved with party affairs.  Mayawati is also 3 time CM of UP, she was also a member of Rajya Sabha.

There are many more regional parties who are controlled by a particular family, like- Akali Dal- Earlier Akali Dal used to be a cadre based party but afterwards it was controlled by Prakash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh. Badal was CM of Punjab for 5 times. Sukhbir’s wife Harsimrat Kaur is is Union Minister in present NDA govt. Haryana Vikas Party of Chautala family in Haryana. Ram Vilas Paswan has floated a party in Bihar and he is also trying to promote his son. Ex PM Charan Singh’s  son Ajit Singh has also floated a party in UP. There are many leaders in the country who have floated political party to promote their family, as politics has become a lucrative business.

As they say politics is the last resort of scoundrels. If there are more scoundrels in the family it is natural that families will control such parties.
