On the 3rd Weekend of March 2018, few hatke thoughts:
Change is one thing, which you can not avoid and if you have to move with the world you have to adopt the changes, and if you don’t you will be left behind.People of my generations are very lucky as we must have seen many changes, and we adopted all of them while growing up, I would like to list few of them:
- Let us consider listening music- From big diode/triode valve radios which were electrically operated to transistor based radios and they were known as transistors only which were battery operated . Then gramophone discs to spool type tape recorder/player to cassette player/recorder to CD player/ recorder. Then finally download the music on Computers to download on Cell phone to down load on USB device which can be connected to any music system/computer/car stereo player etc. So people of my generations and next one generation easily adopted all the changes while listening music.
- Now let us come Visual area ie seeing movies etc- Initially there was only Cinema Halls where you could go and watch movies , some ads and Govt’s News Reel . Then came B/W Television(TV) where you could watch some programs, film songs and News, then came Colour TV and sponsored programs till this time TV media was controlled by Govt. Then came video Cassette Player and Recorder by which you could see any pre recorded program/movies etc on the Cassette tapes and play the same on the player and you could record the program also and then play. This shook the film industry and people almost stopped going to Cinema Halls and started watching movies sitting at home by hiring Video cassettes. Then Satellite TV came in 90s which was through cable network and your Cable Network operator also showed old/new movies this changed the TV viewing system, people were offered multi channel choices instead of 2 Govt controlled channels, after this came Direct To Home (DTH) TV where cable operator was by passed and with your dish antenna you could get different signals from Satellites. In the mean time Video Cassette Player/Recorders were replaced by Digital Video Players/Recorders .Similarly during same time in cinema halls projectors were replaced by digital viewing system. Now we have come to stage that you do not need any of the above system now you can get any program/movie on your computer system and Cell Phone through internet with the aid of streaming sites, which stream live programs also, you will have to just down load the requisite App on to your system, some sites are paid site whereas some are free sites.
- Let us come to communication system- earlier there were 3 systems of communications- Letters through Postal system, Telegram and Telephone. Let me first start with telephone- earlier to make your call local or outstation, you have to request operator to connect, then came local direct dialing you might remember the dial type phone instruments where you have to put your finger in required number slot and turn the dial till end, but outstation calls were still through Operators, there used to 4 types outstation calls: General, PP(it was general but only for particular person, if that person is not available then only minimal PP charges were collected), Urgent Call, Lightning call and Overseas/International call. Then came Subscriber Trunk Dialing(STD) where you could dial any outstation calls within country from your instrument and some time after yuu could dial even international calls from your phone(ISD). Then came the biggest change in telephone system-the touch button phone, which was one of the biggest invention of last century, because after this telephone system changed rapidly. after this first came cord less phone, where you could take handset away from your instrument for short distance and still communicate by telephone. Then came the biggest change in telephone system and that is Mobile phone or Cellular(Cell) phone and this happened in late 90s, and you all know how it revolutionise the phone industry. Next let us discuss Postal system- Govt controlled postal system is still operating in the country, where you have to put your letter(postcard, inland letter and envelop) in letter box, which is collected by postal employee and then delivered to addressee by their delivery system. Then came for faster delivery the Private Couriers, in this system the Courier Co’s person would collect the letter/parcel from your place and deliver the same to the addressee in shortest possible time. Next is Telegram- earlier the telegram was transmitted through code system from Telegram Office to other telegram office in the country and from there message used to be delivered to addressee, this system continued for so many years and eventually govt closed down the same last year due to other mode of fast and instant communications. In this area first came telex- where by typing message on one telex machine ( given individual identity number) the message used to be automatically typed on the telex machine of receiving identity number. Then came Facsimile(Fax) machine , this used to work with telephone system, where if you put a paper with message in one machine and after connecting thru the telephone line the receive Fax machine telephone number, the exact copy of the paper which has been transmitted by originating fax machine will be printed on receiving fax machine. Then with the advent of mobile phone the SMS system started and afterwards came whatsApp and many more apps like messenger, Face book etc to communicate the message instantly.
Above are the few changes we saw during our growing years and till present days. Hope I must have revived your memories about usage of old systems in the field mentioned above. In one my next weekend blog I will write about the companies which did not change with the times and went bankrupt.
Awaiting your views/feed backs/comments.

Very true indeed! We are a lucky generation to experience and adopt to these changes
