For Hatke topic of this weekend, I am continuing with last week end topic of 101 best Hindi films and today, and today I will brief you about the films released in 70s, ie (1970-79).
- Mera Naam Joker (1970)- Produced & Directed by Raj Kapoor. The film was about life of Joker(Clown), starting from his adolescent years till his late years. Some people even said this is biopic of Raj Kapoor. Film was a major disaster when released and Raj Kapoor suffered a heavy loss, the film flopped that time may be because of its length which was more than 4 hours, but now the the film is considered as classic. Film also starred Manoj Kumar, Simmi, Dharmendra, Padmini & Rajendra Kumar. Excellent music by Shanker Jaikishan.
- Safar (1970)- Directed by Asit Sen. Story about a medical student (Rajesh Khanna) suffering from cancer, his love for fellow student (Sharmila Tagore) and how he forces her to marry (Feroze Khan) because he comes to know that he has got a short life. Wonderful music by Kalyanji Anandji.
- Anand (1971)-directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. In this film also Rajesh Khanna plays a cancer patient, who knows he has only six months to live. How he transforms life of his fiend played by Amitabh Bachchan (his first major break) and others is a crux of the story. Life best role enacted by Rajesh Khanna, as if this role was meant for him and no one else could perform.Good music by Salil Chaudhary.
- Amar Prem (1972)- P & D by Shakti Samanta. Rajesh Khanna plays a character of a rich man , who is not happy in married life. He falls in a love with Kothewali singing girl played by Sharmila Tagore, the picture is about how their sublime love story progresses. Excellent music by RD Burman.
- Koshish (1972)- Directed by Gulzar. Film is about story of deaf and mute couple played by Sanjeev Kumar & Jaya Bhaduri, who are helped by a blind person(Om Shivpuri) to raise their son. Memorable acting by Sanjeev Kumar and ably supported by Jaya Bhaduri.
- Bobby(1973)- P & D by Raj Kapoor. After the debacle of Mera Naam Joker which sent Raj Kapoor into heavy debts, he came back with a smash hit – Bobby, a teenage love story. Romantic lead played by his second son Rishi Kapoor and teenager Dimple Kapadia. Other in the cast were Pran, Premnath, Farida Jalal & Aruna Irani. It had a super hit music by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
- Zanzeer(1973)- P&D by Prakash Mehra. A film where, writer Salim Javed first time created the role of angry young man, played by Amitabh Bachchan. In this he played a role of upright police officer who in childhood sees the murder of his parents, how he meets the villain and takes revenge is the the main story, Ably supported by Jaya Bhaduri and Pran. Good music by Kalyanji Anandji.
- Rajnigandha(1974)- directed by Basu Chatterjee. A simple love story about a girl played by Vidya Sinha who is in dilemma whom to choose her college love (Dinesh Thakur) who is an artist now or her present love (Amol Palekar) who is a clerk in commercial organisation. This film came as fresh air, which gave birth to parallel cinema.
- Ankur(1974)-directed by Shyam Benegal. One more in the list of parallel cinema. A rich landlord( Anand Nag) gets involved with his low caste maid (Shabana Azmi) whose husband (Sadhu Meher) is good for nothing. After his marriage , when his wife starts staying with her, he starts developing guilty conscious and mistreats the maid, who is pregnant with his child now. Wonderful acting by ensemble cast.
- Deewar(1975) Directed by Yash Chopra. One more film on angry young man theme of Salim Javed. A story of two brother who have been brought up their mother in a hard way. One become involved with under world and becomes smuggler(Amitabh Bachchan) and other becomes Police Officer (Shashi Kapoor). Film is about conflict between two brothers. Wonderful acting by Amitabh and ably supported by Shashi Kapoor and Nirupa Roy (as mother).
- Chupke Chupke (1975)-Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Dharmendra who is married to Sharmila Tagore lands up at the house of Om Prakash( Sharmila’s elder sister’s husband), and afterwards Sharmila also comes there, and soon after Amitabh( Dharmendra’s friend) also lands there impersonating as Sharmila’s husband. After that it is a laugh riot, which is to be seen on the silver screen.
- Aandhi(1975)- Directed by Gulzar. Suchitra Sen , a budding politician, falls in love with Sanjeev Kumar, who works in a star hotel. They get married and after that differences crops up between them and they separate. After few years they meet in different circumstances, when she comes for her election campaigning in s different city, and stays in hotel run by him. How the memories get revived, which again bring them together and they reconcile their differences. Wonderful acting by lead pair and excellent music by RD Burman.
- Sholay(1975)- Directed by Ramesh Sippy. Film analyst say this is the best Hindi picture ever made in India. Sanjeev Kumar plays , a retired Police Inspector who is now handicapped, takes the help of two small times thieves ( Dharmendra & Amitabh Bachchan) to catch a dacoit (Amzad Khan) who has killed his entire family. There are other characters also along with the main story, and they also play important roles, and these small characters also became very famous after the film became super hit. Other than main actors mentioned, other members of the cast were Hema Malini, Jaya bhaduri, Helen, Leela Chitnis, Asrani, Jagdeep, MacMohan, Viju Khote and many more. Music by RD Burman was very good.
- Amar Akbar Anthony- P& D by Manmohan Desai- one of the best Hindi masala film. A story of 3 brothers who gets separated from their parents in childhood and who are brought up by others of three different religion, Amar(Vinod Khanna-a police Inspector), Akbar ( Rishi Kapoor- a Qawaal) and Anthony (Amitabh Bachchan- a small time operator). Story revolves around them and their love interests, and how they meet in the end and get united with their parents. Star cast included- Praveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, Neetu Singh, Pran , Nirupa Roy and others. good music by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
- Golmaal(1979)- Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. One of the best comedy films ever made. To escape from his boss’s (Utpal Dutt) firing Amol Palekar creates the fictitious character of his twin brother. And a what happens after is a total laugh riot. Good music by RD Burman.

I do remember watching these films in theatres in Delhi, Mumbai & Calcutta depending on where I was posted at that time. All very good films.
