I am continuing with the weekend Hatke topic of top 100 Hindi films, and today I will be briefing you all about the films released during last decade of last century ie 1990-1999.

  1. Agneepath(1990)- Directed (D) by Mukul Anand- story about a small boy who sees his poor & honest father being killed by the villain (Danny). Boy grows up and joins underworld and how he takes revenge of his father’s death is the story. Amitabh Bachchan immortalised the character of Vijay Dinanath Chouhan. Other main characters were  his mother (Rohini Hattangadi), sister (Neelam), sister’s love interest (Mithun Chakravorty) and wife (Madhavi). But the film belonged to Amitabh Bachchan.
  2. Lamhe (1991)- P & D by Yash Chopra. Anil Kapoor in his younger days is fascinated by Sridevi, but she loves someone else and after marriage with her love, she gives birth a daughter. Later both husband and wife dies in a accident, and the responsibility of daughter’s upbringing comes to Anil’s Dai Ma (Waheeda Rehman). When the young girl grows up (Sridevi in double role) she starts loving Anil. Rest of the story is about  dilemma of Anil Kapoor in acceptence of her love. Fine acting by Sridevi and Anil Kapoor. Excellent music by Shiv Hari.
  3. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar- D by Mansoor Khan. A teenage school story, where sports played an important part. Story of small town where there are many residential schools and also a normal day school for local students. The students of the rich school show off and also excel in sports. Story is about how the student of a local school win annual sport award by defeating student of posh school. Lead role played by Aamir Khan , well supported by Ayesha Jhulka, Pooja Bedi, Deepak Tijori, Mamik and Kulbhushan Kharbandha. Good catchy music by  Jatin Lalit.
  4. Hum Aapke Hain Koun ( 1994) D by Sooraj Barjataya. An ultimate musical family drama. A nice amalgamation of characters of older and younger generation with quality family values.Main story is about 2 brothers & 2 sisters from different family. When elder brother marries elder sister , the younger ones also develop love relationship. But when the wife of elder brother dies in an accident then how the younger sister agrees to marry the husband of late elder sister, to take care of their son, and how the younger brother sacrifices his love is the main story. The film had 14 songs and all were super hits and the main chart buster was “Didi Tera Devar Diwana”. Madhuri Dixit in the role of younger sister lived the role. Other in the cast were Salman Khan, Renuka Shahane, Monish Behl, anupam Kher and Alok Nath. Music was composed by Ram Laxman.
  5. Andaz Apna Apna(1994) D by Raj Kumar Santoshi. One of the best comedy movie. Story of two good for nothing young boys who any how wants to become rich. How they try to impress a heiress of a rich NRI is the main story. It was a laugh riot. Fine performance by Aamir Khan, Paresh Rawal and Shakti Kapoor, ably supported by Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon & Salman Khan.
  6. Rangeela (1995)- D by Ram Gopal Varma. Aamir Khan and Urmila Matondkar are childhood friends. Urmila is a small time actress who wants to become film heroine. In this process she gets the support of Jackie Shroff( who is a film star), who signs a film opposite her as a heroine. Jackie Shroff starts liking and loving her, but she starts missing  madness of Aamir and realises she loves her, and similarly Aamir also realises he loves her.  Excellent music by  AR Rehman, and this was his first hindi film.
  7. Dilwale Dulahniya Le Jayenge (1995) -D by Aditya Chopra. It is considered as a ultimate in romantic films. Story is showing how the Indian origin people staying overseas still holds the Indian values. In this case a young couple wants to get married with their family’s blessings, and how the young couple succeed in their endeavour is the story. Fine acting by ensemble cast of Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Anupam Kher, Amrish Puri and Farida Jalal. Super hit music by Jatin Lalit.
  8. Khamoshi-The Musical(1996)- D by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Story is about Deaf and dumb couple Nata Patekar and Seema Biswas, whose only daughter when grows up(Manisha Koirala) falls in love in Salman Khan and develops interest in music, which her parent do not like. How they accept her music and her lover is the balance story. Fine acting by ensemble cast and  wonderful music by Jatin Lalit.
  9. Bandit Queen (1996)- D by Shekhar kapoor. A biopic film  on the famous lady   dacoit  Phoolan Devi. The film showed how in the childhood she was molested and later used by her husband & others, which made her run away and join dacoit’s gang and how she forms her own gang. In the end she surrenders to the  police and spend time in jail. Seema Biswas lived the role of Phoolan Devi.
  10. Maachis (1996)- Directed by Gulzar. A film based on the insurgency in Punjab during 80’s. Chandrachud Singh is a young man , who by circumstances becomes a terrorist, when he was tortured by police in some false case. Tabu plays his love interest, who also joins terrorist group while searching for him. Nice acting by ensemble cast, and wonderful music by Vishal Bhardwaj, in his first film.
  11. Border (1997)- D by JP Dutta. This is film based on the actual happening during Indo Pak war of 1971 in the area of adjoining the border in Rajasthan. Fine acting by ensemble cast of Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Jackie Shroff, Punit Issar, Kulbhushan Kharbandha & others. Fine music by Anu Malik.
  12. Viraasat (1997)- D by Priyadarshan. Set in a village, is a story about feuding families. Amrish Puri play the role of elder patriarch who believes in betterment of villagers, but other section of the family always try to put hurdles in his path. Anil Kapoor, who plays  a US educated son of Amrish Puri,  takes over the  responsibility  after Amrish Puri’s death, and what hurdles he faces is the balance part of story. Wonderful acting by Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri and Tabu( who plays Anil’s wife).
  13. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam- A triangle love story. Ashvariya Rai is daughter of known classical musician, Salman Khan is NRI, who comes to their home to learn Indian classical music. The love blooms between two, but she is forced by her family in marriage to Ajay Devgan. After marriage she confesses to her husband about her love. Ajay takes her to country from where Salman had come. During the process of searching Salman Khan she realises Ajay is not a bad man, who has even become ready to leave her so that she can join her lover.  Excellent music by Ismail Darbar and wonderful acting by three lead players.
